I found the rear wheel slightly misaligned and with that corrected and on top of the derailleur adjustment the bike is shifting A-1. The clikvalves arrived. They were shipped from the UK and it took forever. They look great and there's a very positive “click” when they engage. I got three kits with adapters for pumps. I'll get to installing them in a bit. Seems straightforward. Take out presta cores, replace with clik valve cores and inflate.
 
Not sure if I’ve asked this before, but could you please suggest a bicycle for me?

I’m totally out of my depth here—I haven’t been on a bicycle in 15+ years. Back then I only rode local Mexican brands while growing up.

I’m looking for something simple and budget-friendly for short commutes. I usually take my motorcycle for those trips, but I’d like to mix in a bit of physical activity. Last year I even thought about getting one for indoor training, so having that option would be a nice bonus.

I went through this relatively recently and then went down a rabbit hole. I also haven’t cycled in forever but getting back into it is a lot of fun.

For my commuter bike I got a mail order Decathlon gravel bike and then took it to a local bike guy to make sure it was set up ok. If I do it again I'd set it up myself since I'm getting more familiar with playing with bike stuff. The decathlon bikes had very good components for less than the name brand ones and came very well reviewed.

What's your budget? You don't have to go new either. Lots of people upgrade to the latest and greatest and sell a bike that's only a few years old.

I ended up getting a Trek hardtail in a sale and then also just got a Giant full suspension e mountain bike.

I really like my Decathlon bike to be honest and it was a lot less than the other two. I take it on gravel rail trails and commute to work on it. I had to change the saddle and I'm about to change the handlebars for a bit more rise too.

Edit: I just looked at Decathlon and their offerings look a bit slim but plenty of bike stores are having sales right now. Trek has some, Giant has a few and Specialized have a sale on now too.

I got back into cycling about 10 years ago, the Cdn Tire 24 speed sitting in the garage didn't last long and couldn't change/fix the bottom bracket. I didn't want to go the expensive new bike route(which compared to now would have been a bargain) and bought a used mountain bike off Kijiji It had great components as the seller worked at a bike shop but was injured and stopped riding. JC99 has good points above. Try a few and see what fits you best. I like mountain bikes as I can jump of curbs, go onto gravel, dirt etc and prefer it to a road bike, as I only ride 20km at a time. Full respect to road bike mileage munchers, I'd never last.

Thread 'Help with bicycle purchase'

Squeeze and I are looking for new bikes. I couldn't find the thread where IFiddles was looking for one so..

Early 60's. Looking for bikes we can ride the provincial parks we camp at. Typical trails involve roots and rocks. Most parks have lots of elevation changes.

I'm thinking the standard knobbed mountain bike tires, simple 5 speed, not sure we need suspension. If so the front would alone would be enough.

Currently on old mountain bikes with 10-15 speeds that don't all function. One rigid and one sprung on the front. They work but one is my son's and about to leave so it's upgrade time.
 
Fun question. E-mountain bikes are a little different when it comes to shifting. The motors can intentionally apply a load for a short time after peddling (overdrive) which can make shifting a little different to a non motorized bike. In addition the extra torque from the motor can damage components more easily if you get this wrong. I've had a couple of gratey gear moments on the new bike which is taking a little adjustment. It's not a huge deal but I read that the new wireless derailleur sets can shift under load.

Anyone played with one? Gimmick or impressive?

Right now I'm just exploring as the upgrade sets don't look cheap. A wireless derailleur with shifter and battery and charger upgrade kit from Shimano at the XT line is $1500 but these are also built for mountain bikes too and are pretty bombproof. They do look nice and never need adjustment after being set. My current bike has a Shimano SLX setup which is still a very good line.

First big mountain bike ride on my e-bike today. Getting up hills with assistance is awesome but there's still work to do. My shoulders and arms ache right now, but it's a good ache. My body armour is soaked so I need to find out how to wash them properly. Two pedal strikes and a chain ring/ bottom bracket hit off a root that I didn’t realize was as big as it was. So much fun in banked turns. My sense of surviveability/knowledge of lack of my own skills made me take the alternate route past the jumps.

Another quick update. For the clik valves one of the drawbacks is some pressure gauges don't work with them. The Fumpa keyring gauge does and it's pretty well reviewed, is accurate and can be used with shrader valves on motorbikes too as well as normal Presta valves. Looks like Canadian sources are around 50 bucks. I ordered two and while pricey they are very well made.

I never heard of that type of valve. Had to look it up. Very interesting.
