Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

That is the one deterrent of a Tesla is the service/maintenance/repair. If something happens and need a fix, you really have no place to go other than Tesla authorized facilities.

He found a independent Tesla shop it will be interesting to see what they say parts are also available for 1/4 of what Tesla charges if needed. He has an appointment next Wed.

F150s are popular, but also suffer a lot more gremlins than other pickups.

I’m wondering what the new Fathom will be like, I’ll be in the hunt for a new truck next year.

On one hand, I think you're underlining my point of not buying anything lower on the Ford production line than an F150, like the Maverick in the post I was replying to.

On the other hand... I've put a little short of 300,000 km between two F150s and I can't really say either one suffered any "gremlins" that couldn't be attributed to wear/use. Maybe my cluster, which started acting up around 240k km. If you said that should last the life of the truck I'd probably agree... but even then, it was like $300 to get it fixed at a cluster specialist.

I found a set of OEM rims for like $250 for the whole set in Brantford. Literally cheaper to get nice chrome take off OEM rims on kijiji to use for my winter tires than it is to buy steel rims that will look like junk in a few years from Canadian Tire.

When my rear bumper was starting to show some rust around the rear parking sensors, I literally found an open box black rear bumper for my gen of F150 for $200 on Marketplace...

It's like when I had my Sportster and spent $1,000 on upgrades from Marketplace for it over a winter that probably would've cost me 3-4x as much brand new. When you have such a popular vehicle and you want something for it, you never order it, you just watch, and wait, because someone will post it very soon.
 
A co worker has a model y and the rear wheel bearing was noisy 9g plus tax at the Tesla repair center. They want to do both rear wheel bearing and every suspension arm and mount front and rear. On a 2023 with 180000 on it. He is taking it to someone else to look at.

Is the 9G for the whole package or just the one bearing? Some suspension parts are best done in pairs.

9 g is for both the rear wheel bearings control arms on all corners and the the rear wheel bearing mounts. Basically every suspension component except shocks and struts front and rear. 7g in parts apparently Tesla suspensions a known problem but this seems crazy.

A lot of these problems are simply because they're new cars, people aren't used to them, and complain about anything and everything under the sun.

I don't put much faith in the JD power reports.
 
I wouldn't buy any Ford that wasn't an F150 and up to be honest...

And I say that as someone who's happily taken his last F150 to 325,000 km, and is currently on his second one...

If small, Japanese. If big + money, also japanese. If big - money, F150.
I'm about to hit 100,000km on my 2023 Maverick XLT...and frankly it's been practically bulletproof so far.

However...I'm also debating adding a COBB for some extra HP once this warranty bombs out.

Sport suspension waiting as I can't be bothered to check which bolts/hardware are one time use on the Maverick suspension (apparently lots of them)...
 
In New Zealand hybrids have to pay a km road tax because there's no other way to collect for road maintenance.

Owners of older hybrids often just run on ICE when the batteries die as the economics don't warrant a replacement.

They still have to pay the hybrid road tax because there's no simple way of pulling the battery and re-certifying the vehicle as ICE only.

High hp, heavy weight and cheap fuel are the best recipe for tire wear. Now, I'm not surprised that people are caught off-guard by the speed of wear as they haven't experienced anything similar before. It's almost entirely a driver issue though. Get an ICE replacement instead of a supercar (eg a bolt instead of a plaid) and tire wear will probably be close to an ice car (still a little worse due to weight and torque off the line but not grossly different).

Consumer surveys are as useless as polls. Maybe even more so as most consumer surveys self-select the participants which is one of the worst possible methodology (some polls may intentionally select participants to skew results which is even worse).

Many hybrids won't allow the car to function in ICE mode only if the batteries die.

They're just set up in a way that won't allow it.

Ouch! That’s a heavy bill for a wheel bearing! I’d have figured 2 hrs labour and a $300 bearing.

I don’t think a model 3 bearings are hard to change.

I'd say this is also one of those repairs that any competent mechanic / DIY'er can do considering that it's strictly mechanical, and not much electrical / programming that needs to be touched.

Probably but Tesla isn't known for easy parts availability. I have no idea if aftermarket (OEM style or upgraded) parts are available. Replacing suspension arms without a crash is strange. The bushings all fail over time but the arms are normally good for the lifetime of the vehicle.

I just got a quote on this 2015 Model S 70 that's $13K with 150,000 (here: Facebook ), and even on a pay as you go plan at 2,000 km for the whole year (I figured it would be a rare occasional use secondary cage when I don't want to take the truck out), it still costs MORE per year to insure than the 2016 F150 I told them I do about 30,000 km/yr on. LOL wtf bs is this?!?! 😂

Ya, parts are generally cheap as there are so many F150s.

Mine is a 2013, it’s had an easy life and I’ve got about 260k on a Coyote powered FXR, driveline has been bulletproof (I maintain everything on time).

Rust is becoming an issue, not unique to Fords, but despite periodic spraying, I’m doing some major rust repair to the box frame rails this week. All my brake backing plates needed replacing this year - not a fun job.

My truck doesn’t do much in the way of hard work, it’s basically my get to work vehicle. It does see cold harsh winters, that’s a killer for F150s. Broken plastic parts, door and gate mechanism failures, heater controls, low oil pressure at startup are common cold weather issues you don’t see impacting Ram or GM trucks. A weird one is the seat foams in F150s freeze and deteriorate quickly in the cold. I’m replacing the driver seat foams for the second time - seat currently feels like a park bench.

I’m not unhappy with it, it owes me nothing. If I replaced trucks every 5 years I wouldn’t have these challenges. But I don’t, I sweat them out until the bodies give out so I’ll go RAM or GM next time.

At one of the remote places I work, you can’t go down a street without seeing dead F150s - it’s hilarious to see.

I just got a quote on this 2015 Model S 70 that's $13K with 150,000 (here: Facebook ), and even on a pay as you go plan at 2,000 km for the whole year (I figured it would be a rare occasional use secondary cage when I don't want to take the truck out), it still costs MORE per year to insure than the 2016 F150 I told them I do about 30,000 km/yr on. LOL wtf bs is this?!?! 😂

For ***** and giggles, I changed the vehicle insured for this quote from the Model S, to my 2016 F150, and changed nothing else in the insurance quote, the price dropped by more than $2,000/yr on the pay as you go insurance and it dropped by $3,000/yr on the traditional insurance.

My truck is currently averaging $0.22/km this year...

So with the 2k km estimate as a secondary vehicle... the Tesla would save me $440 on gas... while costing me $2,000 more in insurance (vs a secondary F150)... for a net loss of $1,560.

If I were to not need my truck for work and were looking to daily drive the vehicle instead, and went with traditional insurance, I would have to drive 13,600 km in the Tesla, to break even on the $3,000 difference in the fuel cost.


Both maths assume that electricity costs is zero which obviously isnt the case, I just don't know how much it would cost to charge the thing nor do I care because I think the point is pretty clear... insurance is ******* ridiculous on this thing and kills the deal. Wtf is going on there?

Every Tesla I've quoted for insurance is $80-100/month more than any other vehicle I've quoted (Maverick, GTI, Bolt, Volt, Equinox).

Don't forget the new ones are all aluminum. ****, even my 10 year old 2016 F150 already has the aluminum cab and bed. I have the inside of the bed lined, get the underside oiled before winter, and while the front and rear bumper can get rust (still steel), those can be bought cheap on marketplace and kijiji and replaced yourself at home.

But yeah, my old 2006 F150 was starting to do the bubbling under the paint in a couple spots (under the gas cap, front cab corners, etc.)... 20 years old and 325,000 km... I wasn't fussed about it.
