Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

The price sounds good until it hits the market and people start wanting the extras. The options will cost more if not installed at the time of vehicle manufacture.

How many people under 50 know how to operate a crank window?
Like most things that look good elsewhere, they will be ruined when they arrive. Why bring in a $20k truck when the nearest competition is $45k? If it appears here, it will be just under existing comps.

Neighbour is getting a fourth car, a model Y. I think our federal taxes might be subsidizing it.

I’ve considering swapping the Maverick for a Model Y….but Elon…and Tesla obstruction of DIY repairs keeps me away.

Tempting as Model 3 can be had for a sweet price as a used vehicle. Buddy bought a used (minor damage) 3 for 21k.

He adores it.

The right to repair extortion will destroy the reasonably priced used car market, if it even exists anymore.

A winter beater or starter vehicle used to be a 10 or so year old that could be kept running for a few more years by topping up fluids.

Now automatics don't have dipsticks or a means to check and top up other than pay a dealer $300 to do a flush and refill. You either buy a new car or pay $300 when you are concerned about a few drops of fluid on the garage floor. ICE fluid anxiety pairs up with EV range anxiety.

A graduate's first job combining student loans with payments on a $50,000 car is a brutal way to start life. Similar to the poor sap saving for home down payment.

I had some work done on my car this morning, owner told me he's going to be closing up shop soon.

Many of the high end new cars (MB in his example) won't even allow you to open up the hood without special MB software.

He said that the writing is on the wall. Right to repair is going away, and only older cars will be accessible by mechanics / shops like him.

It'll take some years, but he said within the next 10 years it'll be a different world.

That particular MB is unique. There is nothing user serviceable under the hood. That is where they have all the high voltage stuff. Instead of needing to deal with electrical safety to protect against stupidity on every connection and part, they drew the protective line at the hood. If you have the skills/tools/ability to work on the HV system, you can get the hood open. If the hood stumps you, you probably shouldn't be in there.

There are supposedly cars now that you can't change the brake pads on, without connecting to a dealer network and using their software.
The era of the $500 oil change is approaching.

We just had the equinox in for some minor service brake module reprogram and they gave us a mecedes GLC as a loaner for a couple of days. Wife wanted her car back and couldn't understand why anyone would buy the benz.

Interesting concept here. Basically a kit that allows the F150 Lightning to accept charging power while driving to extend range. Throw a 10 Kw generator in the bed or additional batteries and add a couple hundred km to the towing range, which it badly needs, especially in the winter.

One of the first ev's I saw was a tiny truck (smaller than Kei truck) on whidbey island with a generator running in the bed.
