Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

I was in Montreal in December and had a taxi take me to the airport that was a BYD. It was roomy but, everything about it screamed early 2000s Hyundai plastics and Casio instruments. Not sure how long they would hold up. 🤷‍♂️

Granted it was being used as a taxi and would get a lot of kilometres.

It’s kinda like a temu version of an EV. It is sized and drives as it should. Questionable quality for certain.
Things are changing fast. A Chinese-Canadian co-worker just sent me this, and it gives some sense of what you can buy in China (assuming you can handle the hyperbolic enthusiasm of the narrator):

I still have my doubts about long-term reliability, and a lot of the gadgets hold zero appeal for me personally, but these cars are far more ambitious and relentlessly trying new stuff to see what works. One thing that's clear, though, is that they're not just cheap and cheerful econoboxes, they're luxury status symbols that value tech above all.

Why are they almost all renders? If these are things that I can easily buy, there should be actual video of them. Also, price in China is likely completely unrelated to price in NA.

Because the video is pulled from ads. These cars exist, believe me, I hear about them regularly in the office when someone comes back from a visit to China.

Marc with Eve II ...taking on Africa with an EV bike ...incremental improvements over his first one.
Getting there.... 🍿

Almost there and available now - I could ride that. 105 kph top speed, 130 km range ( not quite enough ), $6999 .... - decent needs to come down to $5k for me.

Price speed and range nudging what I want.
The cheaper batteries with longer range will

an eye opener on Chinese production
I don't think Australia will get all isolationist. Needing to have a motorcycle licence to ride these bigger machines is a good idea but will limit uptake.

I continue to be impressed with what I see of China.
Company producing this has 100 million EV machines it has produced for sale around the world.
He just casuallymentioned sodium ion batteries in passing.

I could likely live with this even now for every thing I need around the city.
2 year warranty.

I’m not in favour of governments picking winners and losers with these incentives. Pricing will increase and the rebates end up padding manufacturer profits.

I’d rather they offer rebates to home improvements specifically to upgrade electric panels and have ev outlets located near parking areas etc.

New home builders can include it as a perk and rebates to retrofit existing residences.

It’s not effective to all residents such as condo high rises and multi unit places but, we have huge subdivisions with panels already at capacity and it’s tempting to rig up something cost effective but, dangerous.

How does Carney profit from your idea? That is the key question that must be answered to understand every policy decision.

EV rebates are back!

More money on fire and car prices to crank up again for any qualifying cars (5k for EV and 2.5k for PHEV) - need to be under 50k CAD (if not built in Canada).

Also, it has to be from a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada, so not the Chinese imports. Not very many models will qualify. The new Chevy Bolt will qualify for the short period that GM is planning to build it. South Korean imports will qualify, but the Ioniq 5 (regardless of built in US or Korea) is too expensive. The new Nissan Leaf will qualify ... US built. The upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 3 will qualify. Maybe this nudges the VW Group to bring over something smaller than the ID4. Maybe it nudges Nissan to bring over the new Micra (which is a platform-mate to the Renault 5 ... built in France.)

Let's hope so! And I hope it's the TOTAL price before tax...because it's easy to list a car at 49,999 and then crank the options to go to 65k or so...but still within the 'list' price of 50k.

An extension of that game that I have never seen them play yet (but Elon has threatened to a few times) is to list the vehicles at 49,999 and make them lease only. In that world, the MSRP is just a fake number on a page as nobody ever gets to buy one at that price. At the end of the three year lease, you could sell them for $49,999 and argue that is the cheapest you can buy that vehicle. As the manufacturer controls the entire market, they get to play with numbers.

Interesting.

Let’s see what the manufacturers come up with deal with this….as they’re very crafty.

In the end I doubt this will benefit the consumer.

The long term goal is long term profit for the manufacturers. That means long term costs for the owners through lease payments, subscriptions and service.

The latter two bother me because I am largely a control freak and don't like other people's hands in my pocket. EV service should be low as electric motors have proven to be very long lasting but the complexity of EVs makes service costs difficult to control. They aren't golf carts with lead / acid power.

I'd give up some range for simplicity but high tech batteries need a lot of tech. Regenerative braking is a tech vs range trade off. A/C and heat are luxuries that would be hard to live without.

I've had early VW beetles where the gas gauges were a good memory and my "gauge" is acting up as of late. Add for that tech.

And the manufacturers want the high tech to reap the service money so enter auto drive and a bunch of sensors.
