Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Yeah ESA absolutely does not want people only pulling at night to charge battery banks. Utilities would lose a fortune. I've watched YT videos on using Volt or Leaf batteries to make a backup, but it could only be used here in a power outage and with a transfer switch/disconnect.

I also looked at Volthium , they make backup batteries and UPS's as well but same ESA rules.

At least in my particular case, in a power loss situation I can just use the vehicle battery to pull load from and keep the refrigerator, freezer etc working. Even at 75% charge I have about 60 kW of usable power available from the Prologue, and about 45 kW from the Niro.

I was contemplating a vehicle battery pack and ulo rates to time shift (charge battery overnight, run house off battery during the day). Esa ruined that plan. Paying for a commercial battery is not economically beneficial.

Are commercial & approved batteries that much more expensive than a vehicle's pack? I haven't checked prices in the last few months, but last fall the prices for solar-designed battery banks have become so cheap (ordering from China) that it almost doesn't make sense to build your own pack from individual cells anymore (LiFePo4).

ESA needs certified batteries and other requirements. I don't know if the china batteries would comply. Bulletin 64-8-2 provides lots of guardrails. The rules keep changing. When I was looking, below grade was impossible. It looks like they allow below grade now. That helps me as I have a cold room that could become a battery bunker.

This was a recently recommended battery by the solar nerds: https://www.enersour.com/Wall-Mounted-Battery-E3-51-2V-300Ah-314Ah-pd775302098.html

cell certifications: CE, UL, IEC 62109-1&-2, IEC 62477, EN61000, UN38.3

battery certifications: CE, UN38.3, MSDS, DG

The 16.077 kWh version delivered to Canada (after freight/customs/etc) came in at under $2,000 CAD apparently - not sure how that price compares to a vehicle pack but it's hard to beat that price building your own from cells.

Since July we have run up 38k on our PHEV and my wife is loving the EV side of things. No issues plugging in and she is watching the display to avoid having the petro engine from kicking in. She wants to take it as her primary vehicle now and see how much she can get out of EV side of things. Green lit to upgrade to 240 vac charging at home so she can do morning errands and then back out again later in the day.

When it’s time for a new vehicle, I’m sure a full EV will be in consideration with more value price point offerings becoming available.

Vinfast didn't last but byd may have better product.

Can you change the volume of the exterior spaceship noise on your new car? One lives up the road and used to be pretty quiet but recently you can hear the spaceship noises inside our house when it drives past.

They just did a update to make them louder as they were too quiet non compliant.I don't think the outside level is user adjusted.

My exterior speaker is freakin' loud. Can definitely hear it in the cabin if the music is off.

Some people have made a resistor plug to go inline of the circuit to drop the dB a bit. Others have disconnected it but I wouldn't go that far personally. I'd feel awful if I hit someone because they didn't hear me coming.

Definitely turns heads though when I'm going by as people try to figure out what the hell that spaceship noise is coming from.

I just saw this posted to YT about the carbon rewards program, has some good info if you're looking to go that route.

Same here. Just across the street they just purchased one. I could hear it last night when they pulled up. Louder than a ICE. If that was every car on my street, thats horrible.

What happened with VINFAST? I still see lots of them around. Are they folding up shop?

Not a car EV…but I’m gonna assume this needs to be licensed and insured…

I think that is old info for current decisions given the latest developments in batteries.
A multi‑material matrix is evident. Sodium‑ion is also a crucial pillar of CATL's low‑temperature ecosystem. Last year CATL launched several dual‑chemistry batteries, among which the LFP + sodium dual‑cell offers a combined solution: lithium for range, sodium for low‑temperature resilience. Passenger cars equipped with the Naxin battery see nearly three times the discharge power at -30°C compared to conventional LFP models with the same energy, capacity retention exceeding 90% at -40°C, and stable discharge even at -50°C.

On the commercial side, CATL's Tianxing Light Commercial Vehicle Low‑Temp Edition — the first mass‑produced sodium‑cell for light commercial use — can be fully frozen at -30°C and still achieve plug‑and‑charge without pre‑conditioning.

Good to see my Polestar 2 tied for 1st for least differential at -14%.

Not sure what year they tested though as I get about 530 km in the warmer months on my 2024 while they show 444.

Marc getting over 312 km on one charge on a touring EV motorcycle - 8 hours riding in multiple conditions, gravel, mountain, highway, town....impressive.
Cars are over 1,000 km per charge and the cold issue seems solved with dual chemistry battery packs.
