Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

My Bolt crossed 100 000 km a week or two ago. Original tyres, though on the one hand some of that 100k has been done on snows and on the other hand, there's still wiggle room before wear bars. I'm still declaring them done after this season. Original brakes, too.

Needs sway bar end links (common problem). "The internet" has found a compatible aftermarket set that supposedly hold up better. I have a set in the box ready to go on when I get A Round Tuit. 50-some-odd bucks.

Charged to 100% before heading to Mosport last Wednesday, which I've not done for quite a while. When the state-of-charge meter ticked down to 50% shortly before getting home, the trip computer reported that it had used 31.2 kWh. Not bad. Won't bother with 100% for going to Mosport next time.
 
For ***** and giggles, I changed the vehicle insured for this quote from the Model S, to my 2016 F150, and changed nothing else in the insurance quote, the price dropped by more than $2,000/yr on the pay as you go insurance and it dropped by $3,000/yr on the traditional insurance.

My truck is currently averaging $0.22/km this year...

So with the 2k km estimate as a secondary vehicle... the Tesla would save me $440 on gas... while costing me $2,000 more in insurance (vs a secondary F150)... for a net loss of $1,560.

If I were to not need my truck for work and were looking to daily drive the vehicle instead, and went with traditional insurance, I would have to drive 13,600 km in the Tesla, to break even on the $3,000 difference in the fuel cost.


Both maths assume that electricity costs is zero which obviously isnt the case, I just don't know how much it would cost to charge the thing nor do I care because I think the point is pretty clear... insurance is ******* ridiculous on this thing and kills the deal. Wtf is going on there?

Like I've said many times, don't confuse Tesla problems with EV problems. Don't confuse "any modern car" problems with EV problems, either.

Some incidents that would be relatively minor in an ice vehicle (like driving over a curb), can damage the battery. As there is no cost-effective way to guarantee the battery isn't damaged internally, the bump causes a write-off.

Mmm, got it. Makes sense. So is this common among all EVs then? I don't remember paying anything substantially different when I had my 2008 Toyota Highlander V6 Hybrid back in 2018... but I guess the hybrid is a much smaller battery.

Fun fact: Vespa scooters tend to get written off more than the average scooter because the metal body is actually the bike's frame... so... when that gets dented... game over.

Rust gets all trucks, I can live with that. It’s the broken plastic parts, linkages, electrical controls, seats… those annoy me.

Hybrid batteries are smaller. They are often up high (eg under rear seat or trunk floor). BEV batteries are typically almost the entire floor pan of the vehicle.

Try and run a quote for a non-tesla like a bolt and see if the price looks more like the tesla or truck.
 
Part of the appeal of EV is the acceleration and I’m sure it continues with ownership. My wife’s friend shows off how quick her Mustang is and pretty sure she drives that way without “showing off”. Will that takes a toll on tires? I’d say so.

I think since the beginning of this thread until present, a lot has improved with EVs all way round. Charging availability, cheaper options, more to choose from etc.

57k and counting, no issues with our “ford”.

Fortunate enough to have the space for hobby vehicles and think home charging an EV for errands and other stuff is the way to go.


Like anything, research is required on the cost benefit of any choices we make.

I ran a little 2016 Kia Soul EV and it was much closer to the truck price...

But I think that is also substantially cheaper than the 2016 F150 and Model S...

I looked up the range and I think it's just enough range to get me to the in-laws, but not enough range that I can drop off the missus and go back home without having to charge first, so... that's not good lol.

I actually considered those Soul EV for a runaround, but after I did the math...it's silly to buy a 3rd car.

I'd love a small EV that my wife can just take to/from work and leave the Odyssey for actual family hauling.

But the math doesn't add up unfortunately to have a 3rd car.

In other news...this can be an awesome option if it ever sees the light of day in Canada:

They have been spotted in Canada (with mfr plates). Arrival is theoretically in 2026 as 2027 models.

Example - a year ago, there was only one fast-charger in Grand Bend. Now there's 3.

There's still the thing about needing multiple phone apps for charging networks, but now, a lot of them talk to each other. Getting a charge going generally means pulling up, opening the app for a compatible charging network (if it lists the charger you're staring at, you are good), then tap the phone against the reader and plug in. Takes 3 seconds. Plugshare generally explains the steps, too. I've seen some on Plugshare where you pay by QR code ... no app needed ... I've not tried one.

Pulling up to a random charger with nothing but a physical credit card or a blank smartphone with no charging apps is still going to be chaos. "go with the flow" install the apps and set up your accounts and payment method ... end of problem (mostly)

Owners of NACS vehicles don't seem to "get" that not all Tesla chargers will work no matter if you can plug in (or use an adapter)

My solution is to operate as though Tesla doesn't exist. Don't own an adapter, don't have an account, if I break down in front of a Tesla charger I'll have CAA tow me to a CCS charger before I hand one cent to Musk. It has not been a problem.
 
Was at a function yesterday (food smoking course) and a couple at our table have a Wagoneer EV and a Mazda MX-30 EV. Wagoneer has been a nightmare for issues but the Mazda has been trouble-free for the last 3 years. Mazda gets the town-duty only at 170 Km range at best.

Used prices on the MX-30 seem decent if you can work with the limited range.
 
Starting with bev. I figured douggie was headed down that route when he cancelled plate fees. Scheduled safeties with per km charge based on weight. Solves a lot of problems easily. Makes some more problems like grift/extortion by shops trivially easy.
In all honesty, lots of cars could use a check up because the stuff people get away with is ridiculous.

Stupidly cambered wheels, dropped to the ground, lifted unsafely for every other road user.

Poland cars get inspected annually or every 2 years, but they’re in good working order. Extreme lifts, drops, mods get taken off quick.
