Anyone recommend a good bait for trapping groundhogs? Preferably something that won't attract skunks ( I hate doing the sheet trick)

Google says:

The most effective baits for trapping groundhogs are fresh, aromatic fruits and vegetables, with cantaloupe being the top choice due to its strong scent. Other effective options include peaches, strawberries, sweet corn, lettuce, string beans, and carrots. Place bait behind the trap trigger plate and create a trail leading inside

Anything groundhogs like skunks will like.

A friend was having problems with skunks and them ignoring his bait. Someone from Hydro told him they use Kentucky Fried Chicken in their transformer traps.

He caught them all and I stopped eating KFC because of the thought of eating skunk bait.

Lead poisoning is effective.

They have gotten funny about dusting rodents inside municipal limits . @Gaoler , on the prairies , what sort of distances are you shooting ? Is this like desert snipper shoots ?

My groundhog shooin' is all done ip Mount Forrest way... I think my longest shot up there was about 300 yards. Most others likely inside 100 yards.
Gophers in Saskatchewan... anywhere from 3ft to however far you can see/shoot.
The longer ranges are tackled with a .17hmr though.

Giving them swimming lessons in a rain barrel, trap and all will also work but it's kind of messy in town.
You are opening yourself up for charges and public lynching by animal welfare people for taking animals swimming. Be careful who/what is watching. Exhaust into a garbage bag is equally effective, less traumatic for the animal and probably doesn't get you charged.

1250 fps? Interesting. It looks like they sell 500 and 1250 fps for the same price. Libs will probably ban both soon as the 500 looks like a scary version than is therefore and assault style firearm.

Looking at bylaws and some towns have an interesting quirk. They class all bb guns and bows as firearms to ban them.
