Costco has one coming up
Moto G Play unlocked. $199.99 - $20= $179.99

The Mrs. has the equivalent of a flip phone and so rarely uses it, it's a pocket weight. I could get her on a full plan for a few dollars more than what her "pay by the call" costs.

Neither of us are app junkies but don't want flame throwers either if Moto is junk.

Should be a fine choice. Loads of inexpensive phones on the market today.
I've had good luck with blackview products available through Amazon just to provide another option.

For light users the case for having one with decent connection protocols is still high because of 2 factor authentication (which everyone should be using these days).

I carry a spare when I’m in remote Canada - I bought a cheap Bison ruggedized android phone off Amazon $110. I pop my sim into it when I head out into the wilds.

Reading the reviews, at bargain basement prices it doesn't come with a charger. I just threw out a box of them. :(
Most phones dropped chargers. Part of government greenwashing to save the environment. I use old phone chargers for cameras. For phones I use multi-port chargers. Now that everything is usb charging, I have no issue with no charger being included.

I've been considering replacing my Amazon Fire HD8 tablet with a cheap Android phone just for the smaller form factor. I really only use the tablet for a cooking app where smaller is better to take up less counter space, as well as some OBD scanning/coding apps where it would be so much more convenient to drop in my pocket rather than always holding it in my hand or trying to find a clean flat surface to put it down on.

Don't you have an old phone that could fill those roles? No need to buy something new for that. For cooking, I bought my wife a google home max and it was awesome for a while. Jumped straight to recipes without scrolling through 100 pages of ads, didn't go to sleep, etc. Sadly, an update a long time ago made it so much worse. Google probably realized that many of the ads they were skipping were costing them money.

Actually, I've never owned an Android phone. My company went from Blackberry to iPhone and been there since. These apps only run on Android. Before my Fire HD8, I was using a Google Nexus 7 until the battery died. BTW, the cooking app is just Meater for monitoring cooking temps, and really to act as an internet gateway for when I'm roasting something in my parents' oven all day and don't need to stick around. That app actually does work with iOS, but my old iphones are so old the app won't run.

If you want the cheapest POS, costco normally has a $100 phone. Pretty terrible camera, really limited storage, etc. For your use, probably just as good as the $200 option.
