Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Hey guys so while I have some down time during the holidays I've got to replace my toilet seal. I've always used wax, but was thinking to go rubber for this time around.

Thoughts?

I am a wax guy personally, just don't cheap out---get one with the plastic core not just the wax.

The only time I use a rubber one is if I know it will be temporary (like a reno) and I will need to take the toilet in and out.

Like motor oil, you will also get the opposite advise....

I'm with you. Wax with the built in funnel is my standard. I have had the displeasure of removing some old neoprene gaskets. Fully saturated in poo water. Gross. Wax is a sticky mess but doesn't absorb.

To me wax is the gold standard, doesn't decay.

Why do you need to replace your existing wax ring?

I have a leak at the bottom of the toilet. Not much just some seeping. Nothing looks cracked or anything, so I think it must have to do with the seal. I did use a wax seal with the plastic funnelly thing.

I made built ins in the Livingroom a few years back but the pine knots are showing through again so I’m going to try Bin sealer.
I also made a walk in pantry but didn’t use dry enough lumber (joined 2x10’s) for the cabinet tops and they’ve dried to leave a slight gap which is enough to be annoying to my ocd. Going to look for some kiln dried lumber to redo those.
After that maybe redo the master closet by making some built ins along bough I’ve never made drawers so I may try to incorporate some pre-made drawers in there if I can find something that fits.

Fix it fast, doesn't take long to rot out a subfloor under a toilet.

I’m a wax guy with the plastic funnel thing . Plumbers use the rubber since it won’t melt or freeze sitting in the truck. And it won’t leak for the first year

Not real plumbers. I know a lots of them - don't know any that use rubber.

Petroleum wax seats down to at least -20, trust me, our crew set a bunch of them in unheated buildings this week.

White shellac will seal pine knots. I used it on a knotty pine dresser that we painted white a few years back, not a hint of knot yellowing yet.

While we're on the plumbing topic as well, any tips to free up a kitchen sink? There's no P-Trap that I can see unless there's a valve in there somewhere. We've tried the baking soda+vinegar trick a few times with limited success.

I would be replumbing that you need a p trap as you are going to get sewer gas in the house and you can add a passive vent while you are at it.

The two clean outs are weird. Can you see below? Original plumber didn't get things lined up right on tail piece to plumbing. Shows lack of caring. Who knows what they did.

I would pull the plugs and snake the drain. By feel (or camera) you can get an idea of what is happening.

IF you don't mind using chemicals, draino over night might help. Like $5 bucks from dollarstore. Then warm water aftewards

Otherwise what @Scuba Steve and @GreyGhost said. Hey you have 2 clean outs run a snake, maybe on both. Then you should plan to redo the drain under the sink to add in the p-trap.
