Metric socket head cap screws

I'm tired of having to run and buy screws every time I want to replace a rusted out screw. Years ago I had bought an assortment of metric screws from Brafasco (now White Cap?) but now the price for an equivalent assortment is like $185. The assortment I bought had lots of screws I would likely never use, but the convenience of having what I needed, when I needed, was wonderful.

Anybody have a suggestion for a source for an assortment that would serve for the average Japanese bike?

There's some cheap sets on Amazon, but not sure if they're cheap Chinese junk. I know they're Chinese. LOL.

A long shot but what I did, specific for my bike was on eBay I bought a bag of fasteners from a bike breaker. It was a few years ago when shipping from the US was cheap. It weighed 15lbs as he had all kinds of brackets and even some relays. I still go to that bag at least 2x per season for me and other riders needing something that I have in there.

Just put together a list of the bolts you've had to use from that kit in the past and make your own kit by buying them from Bolts Plus. Note they have a $10 minimum charge for walk-in COD purchases.

Kitchener, their catalogue is 4 in. thick and you can buy 1 or a hundred of anything.

Plan your list, order them from AliExpress or Temu. Most fasteners are made in China, I’ve never noticed a difference in quality on commodity stuff.

Except for aluminum fairing screws - don’t buy those from China.

Ah, that's good to know. I have read a hundred posts claiming the Chinese/Aliexpress stuff is not worth it.

I really, really didn't want to put together anything like a list of needed screw sizes, but I went through the Honda parts fiche for one of my bikes, picked out a handful of screw sizes that were there, added a decent count of each to my cart on Bolts Plus. It was up to $100 in a flash, even though the per unit price was quite reasonable.

But what's up with Chinese aluminum fairing screws?

If you were in London I'd suggest Laurie's Fasteners. They're my go to. I got all the Hex head cap screws for my latest SOHC project for probably less than 20$ and I think that was Stainless as well.

Chinese fasteners are OK as long as you get them from a reputable maker. The problem with Aluminum is there isn't much in terms of quality standards as they are not common fasteners. I've had some that were great, but most of the aluminum fasteners Ive purchased for fairings and windshields have had threads of butter.

Steel and stainless is inherently stronger material, and there are fairly uniform standards for low-torque applications.
