Anyone here a suspension whisperer? Rain man when it comes to shocks?

I have a plan but I want to know if it makes sense. I'd like to upgrade the fork that's in my Trek Roscoe 7 (hardtail) that is currently a RockShox Recon Silver 140mm travel. Not the bottom of the barrel but it's a budget option best for lighter use.

My idea is to swap the fork from my e-bike into it which is a 2023 Fox 36 Rhythm Float 150mm travel (the Trek frame can take 150mm travel forks).

To replace the fork in my e-bike I was looking at this


That is a 160mm travel Fox Float Performance level fork but a 2021 model.

I was wondering if this would result in an upgrade for both bikes or would it be a downgrade for the E-bike because it’s a 2021 fork with older tech?

Look carefully at the details. Swapping forks around has a lot of pitfalls (different bearing diameters, different stem length, etc). Changing travel normally changes height of head tube and therefore angle and trail.

Why are you upgrading suspension? What's the goal? Like motorbikes, marginal suspension tuned well beats fancy suspension poorly setup.

On that note, I need to pull mine apart again. I can't bottom it out. I suspect I put in too much oil the last time (small syringe meant counting to a big number and I got interupted).

It's mainly the hardtail. Everything else would be a bonus. It's a decent fork on the Roscoe but it’s just for light trail use. would just appreciate a step up as I'm a heavier rider so less chance of stuffing it up.

The rake/offset on the sale Fox fork is 51mm vs the 44mm that’s there now. What I read is that won't change too much in real terms. The extra 10mm of travel wouldn’t change too much either plus it would cost me $50 to put a different air cartridge into the sale Fox fork to make it a 150mm travel fork the same as what's currently in.

It's whether it would be a decent enough upgrade for me to take the time to dismantle two sets of front ends on the bikes.

Unless there is a big issue with your current fox 36 i doubt that you would find much if any improvement with the swap.
That being said if you really want the new fork go for it.
Another option would be a rebuild/freshen up of your existing fork I've being happy with fox factory service out of the west coast in the past FWIW.

The shock on my e-bike is very decent, the one on the hardtail is ok. I just wondered if my idea would work to upgrade both. It would be less work to just swap out the hardtail RockShox fork.
 
The winter bike is ready! I decided to buy a new wheel as a new axle and skewer were onto to cost $40 plus tax. Local bike shop had a 26” back wheel gathering dust and for $99 it was mine. It took me 5 seconds to take it as the old wheel had all loose spokes to deal with too, might still try to fix as a back up. Ya sure.
I had a SRAM nine speed cassette, chain and grip shifter ( never used one before) that I bought off another rider in the spring. This replaced the 8 speed set up I had before. I have a 34 tooth chainring on now, and have a new 36 tooth just in case the 34 skips. All works now on the stand, a road test will confirm if everything lines up. Cleaned up the brakes. Had to take the rear caliper apart as rust and white powdered residue made it impossible to put the new pads in.

Is that sporting a"24 rear wheel?
My mule bike is a 08 big hit 2 FWIW.
 
It does look small but it is 26”. I think this bike is from 05. The kid gave it a beating but that frame is still holding up. The front shocks are starting to leak but I have them fully aired up and I’m not on the trails in the winter anymore.
 
If I want to check whether a suspension fork in one bike will fit on the other is it as simple as measuring the fork crown to steerer tube top distance on both bikes? The concern is the cut steerer tube height. I guess you can always adapt with spacer addition/removal too right?

Are the bearings the same size? Is head tube length similar? If cut short, it may not be possible install on a bike with a longer head tube.

Thanks I'll measure those up. I got a message back from the folks selling the Fox fork about my plans and they said there would be a small advantage to the e-bike but a big step up for the hardtail getting the e-bike shock (if it fits). One of the small advantages for the e-bike would be that the new fork has mounting points for a fender that the one that’s on now doesn’t have. It's also slightly lighter, stronger/firmer and more easily upgradeable.
 
I put paint protector film on my hardtail today. Saw a few scratches that were bothering me so got it done before they multiply. Wasn't too bad to do. Already made my mistakes on another bike first. Main error is not using enough soapy water on the back AND the front of the film and the bike.

I took a pic but it's not worth posting as you can’t really see the film at all once on.

Cheap protection for resale value further down the line. One small roll from Amazon for less than $20 did most of the frame. Very therapeutic work too. Just takes time.
 
Along the same lines but in Toronto. Have to admire the skills but that’s just crazy.
They went the wrong way through the skyway... even cut out the fun bit.
You start at the CN Tower, that way you get to race down these stairs....

We use to race down the stairs on the west side of the Skydome, but they're straight and it's basically a stones test to see who'll stay off the brakes the longest. They best technical set in the city is the Baldwin Steps - Casa Loma to Davenport Rd., hands down.

Sketchiest stairs I've ever ridden were the old ones going from York St. (the old road leading to the OG Queenston-Lewiston Bridge) to the access road to the water treatment plant at the Queenston Docks. The rise/run/angle on each step was vastly different and it was really tricky with them and the pivot turns at the midway landing.

I might have tried that on my banana seat, high handle bar coaster when I was 10 and didn’t know better. 😂
