Canada post rant

I mailed some BMW parts to the UK last month and the rate they gave was $246 to arrive in 5-7 days. It took 2.5 weeks so I put in a request for refund since it was so late without a reason. They gave me a refund but sent me a snotty email saying it was a one-time thing and they don't offer guaranteed rates anymore. So I redid the online price and screen-shot the price with the "5-7 days guaranteed" sentence back to them.
They offer a "guarantee" not a guarantee. They maintain the wording but no longer provide the service. Without the fine print or court, it's hard to tie them down. Maybe they are agreeing to get it out of Canada in 5-7 days.

My neighbors are Fu(ken lazy.
Not a fault of CP. They are just doing their job delivering junk.
How much effort does it take to take the junk with you into your car and recycle it at home.
Apparently it’s too much effort to do that. Many people just put the flyers in the outgoing mail slot.
Thgat’s a GIGANTIC pain in my ass. Have to separate all the junk from real mail. If I miss something, it’s going to get recycled with the flyers.

So for any of you who this, please stop. You may be effecting really outgoing mail.

All you need to do is take a piece of masking tape. Write down “NO JUNK” and place it at the front of the mail slot where the postie can read it. DO NOT put it on the inside of your mail door. We open the entire panel at once and swing it to the side.

Hope this helps.

I have been tempted to put a "No Junk" sticker in mine but I have not for the odd time that I find something interested in a flyer.

But even then it is just to browse out of curiosity and not actually go and by that item.

I like "bonus" mail, it has a lot of value. Drip mats, packing material, fire starter... frankly I wish I got more

If there are any budding entrepreneurs out there there is a market for some sort of recycle box that wont look too out of place screwed to a wall.
Bonus points for decent capacity and easy emptying.

If you get your mail from a Community Mail Box, I have a super easy solution for your request for more junk mail....
Put a recycling box beside the mail box. People will fill it in no time at all. Just make sure you collect it the night before recycling pick up.
It will be a god-send to your postie and everyone else will love that they don't have to lug it all home.

I have not yet been cursed with a community box. It could happen in the future though

If you don't want "junk mail". Put a note in your mail box stating you don't want to receive any UNADDRESSED MAIL (no name or address). After, you might see a little red sticker ( red dot) in your mail box, it's a reminder for the letter carrier that you don't want "junk mail.
There is a process for the letter carrier to "red dot" your mail box but I won't bore you.
Keep in mind you won't receive any McDonalds, Canadian Tire, Crunch Fitness flyers flyers or/maybe and community information afterwards. You can't pick and choose what UNADDRESSED MAIL you want. It's been awhile since I was a letter carrier so things might have changed. You can call you local Canada Post Depot for more information. One more thing, please don't forget to clear your steps and driveways of ice and keep your dog safe and secure. Thank you!

You`re pretty much bang on. At that point the only 'unaddressed mail' we are obligated to still deliver is community newspapers and correspondence from all levels of government.

It’s OK bud… you can call it Junk Mail… ‘cause everyone knows that’s what it really is…

Well, I’m sure there are some near your house.
Same thing. Put a blue box out beside one and come collecting once a week.
You’ll get more than you will know what to do with.

In all my years of receiving "junk mail" I would say that maybe 5% was glanced at before hitting the trash, recycling etc.
It must still be an effective way to advertise as the amounts only seem to grow year after year, yet almost every discussion/conversation on the topic 99% of people state they toss it without even a look.

no such thing as bad press!

I haven't read the full 9 pages of this thread but my wife is an LC for CP and she would be ******** literal bricks if the OP's claim was made against her. It would absolutely mean dismissal. Her supervisors seem to get bent about every little thing and this is HUGE!

She has come home with stories of the stupid **** some of the LC's in her depot have tried so it is no surprise that the perception of the capabilities of CP employees is so tarnished. We have had issue with our own LC but usually the bad ones don't last long.

It is a physically demanding job when done right and short cuts can be tempting, I'm sure. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal integrity and personal pride about doing a job well.

My LC has one of the bags with the cinch up chest strap that keeps it snug to his body and runs the route. Literally. Runs.

If you go to your post office, you can ask them to not deliver "junk" mail, then if it doesn't have a name and address on it, you don't get it.
They mark your "sort" box at the post office AND your mailbox.
it's a "service" the post office offers
... and if you don't have that "mark" the postie is legally required to deliver "junk" mail
The post office has regulations as to what is "junk", you'll still get un-addressed government crap

You can put a post it note in your mailbox for the LC requesting no junk mail. You will know if the request was completed as they will put a no junk sticker in your mailbox.

You can put a post it note in your mailbox
That note isn't enough to stop junk mail. The post office has a legal contract to deliver "junk" mail, and the ONLY way out of the contract is for you to apply to the post office. It has to be done at the post office, before sort... other wise it's up to the carrier to get rid of YOUR junk mail, which can get him fired
I used to be a postie
... and the only people allowed, by law, to put stuff in YOUR mailbox is the post office (that law doesn't get a lot of traction)

So true. The only ones people tend to look at are the Canadian Tire flyers and some food discount coupons.. maybe the front page of a grocery store flyer.

But, it accounts for 30% of Canada Post income. They charge $0.18 for a simple, regular flyer, For bigger ones it’s around $0.25 or so. And we, the posties, get paid something like $0.012 and $0.022 for each…

You are 100% correct on these counts.
My depot was recently restructured (again). They are now interviewing posties every single day wondering why they are doing overtime every single day.

Personal integrity, sure. But the expectations put on us now are nigh impossible. They want you to take a cab back to the depot, have your lunch, then head back out again. Unfortunately, they’ve structured the routes so that the lunch is at about 3pm. If we actually do the cab thing, we will 100% be into overtime.

Hopefully your wife’s depot won’t be restructured anytime soon. We are currently at 210% injuries compared to last year at this time, and it’s been a super easy winter so far.

Simply put, routes are too long and too physically demanding. People are getting hurt due to sheer exhaustion.
