To be masked or not to be masked

Just checked in with a buddy. Unvaxxed, was wiped out for all of last week, going from bedroom to the couch was more or less his limit. Feeling good now but still no sense of taste or smell.

He just turned 40, very healthy.
People that get the most upset about vaccines seem to think in black and white. They see that they got infected and had few symptoms as proof it did not work (or was not required if they didn't do it). The reality is it's all about probabilities. Vaccine improved your odds of staying out of hospital. I'm not sure if that's still the case now that most of the population has been infected but past studies showed vaccine was more effective than a mild case and thankfully I don't know too many people that had really bad symptoms. Like most things, there is no way to prove whether the vaccine helped a specific individual or not as they are an n of one with no control case.

I was talking with someone last week. Close relatives of theirs didn't believe in vaccine. Super healthy athletic 25 yo kid is on his ass with covid (a week in bed so far). Although he has tested positive, family still believes covid is a hoax and he has the flu. It's an interesting story but it would be pointless to try to have a meaningful debate with them.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion. And if they believe at the end of the day it’s all a joke and we’re clowns for believing it then no problem, I can live with that. But just being 100% closed minded about it makes no sense to me.

*Indicate* and slightly lessens, that's a reach Rob.

I was vaxxed, and I infected my wife.

This thing is a game of chance, I'm pretty sure everyone will get their turn testing positive before the end of the year.

I'm still ok with my decision last year to get double vaxxed, as I thought at that time it was the right decision. But no booster, I just can't trust what's being published/preached anymore.
Hospitalization statistics would indicate otherwise and if you get it, you can pass it on.

The entire cornerstone of our society is healthy debate. 🤷🏻‍♂️
That would be nice. Does that mean our society is currently sick, since there are factors stifling healthy debate?

Indeed!

Just a reminder that it took years to wipe polio out even with vaccines. It’s how these things work. We live in an instant gratification society…there are many, many things that are not instant.
And afaik, polio vaccine substantially controlled transmission/infection. This vaccine primarily controls symptoms with a minor reduction in transmission as a side effect.

If the end result is that we find that long term effects are subdued somewhat the success will be equal. Right now we can claim the reduced hospitalizations as a very positive result though.

I wouldn't consider it equally successful. Stopping transmission leads to eradication and other than the occasional small pocket you don't need to worry about it. The minimizing symptoms game I think is not good over a long period. With high infection/transmission we have a decent chance at a bad variant that makes a big mess. Also, although it reduces your odds of hospitalization, if you catch it every year (or multiple times a year), that sends your odds in the wrong direction. Much better than nothing, but I'm worried about complacency. Can you imagine what the world would look like if this had mortality like ebola? We wouldn't have many people left. Maybe STB's bunker was a reasonable expense.

Ebola as a disease is horrible, as a threat to public health widely not so much as it kills effectively stopping hosts from incubating virus and passing it on.

The vaccines for COVID seem to affect viral load and hence that has an effect on decreasing possible mutations.

I was more referring to the mortality, not the actual virus. If a virus ever figures out that incubation period is the winning strategy, we'll be *&^*^ed. By the time we realize that something is happening, it will be all over except the waiting.

The worst virus would be highly transmissible that causes terrible long term effects sometime after infection with few immediate symptoms. COVID 19 actually ticks some, but not all of these boxes, hence why we have been in this situation for the past few years and why it’s not just “the flu”.

We are finding out about the long term effects daily and none of them look wonderful.

stay vigilant and scarred... you just got tired of scarry news at some point and just move on with your life...

No need to be scarred. They have stuff for that.

Hmmmmmm. Now that I think about it, a six pack of this stuff and I could probably become invisible.

don't get me wrong, I do believe some people suffered and died, but it's just hard personally after 3 years of fear (and nothing) stay vigilant and scarred... you just got tired of scarry news at some point and just move on with your life...

I missed this before. It’s not about being scared in my opinion, it’s about being informed. Just because you’re tired of the pandemic doesn’t mean it’s over. I don’t think we need lockdowns but I do think we need at least minimum precautions still.

it's an onerous task when one has to wear for several consecutive hours...
You have the wrong mask. I wear one (N95) for over ten hours a day (consecutively and then occasionally when running errands) and have zero issues.

Yes, when I was forced to wear a 'supplied' mask I had problems. Now that I can choose my own I have found the one that works for me.
