The Reasonably Priced Used Motorcycles for Sale Thread

Can you even use that thing on the street with a rebuilt title? Or just a track toy?
Not legally.
He saftied it 2yrs ago. Took the safety to mto, and that's when the pain started. Been riding dirty since.
Everything on it works. He says it's only got 1 small crack in the plastic around a screw hole. No dents in the tank.
Damn....I wish there was a (legal) way.

Register it in another province and ride it here? I've seen plenty of people register their cars in Alberta for the cheaper insurance.

Possible but not legal. First of all, if your principal residence is here and the vehicle is here you only have x days to get ON plates (60?). Secondly, having AB insurance and bike permanently living in ON doesn't work either. You might as well ride dirty and save the entire premium as they won't be paying out anyway.

Now, that rental company out of QC but operating in TO was doing it by taking the bikes back every xxx days but I doubt the insurance company would look favorably on that scam either.

Oh I know it's not legal/right/proper and all that good stuff. But outside of that, I don't really see any options.

Man, this is bringing back memories in a major way. Exact same thing happened to (a very young and naive) me with my Hawk GT back in about 2001. It had a Salvage brand from Alberta, and I had no idea what that meant until I arrived at the MTO office to be told a hard no. I was desperate, and kept trying, even getting the number of somebody senior at the MTO who seemed extremely put out that a member of the public had both managed to get his number and had the temerity to call him. I knew his answer when he hung up on me.

I eventually tried a different MTO office on Yonge near King (I think?), and the guy I dealt with there must've taken pity on me. He tapped away on his computer for a bit and then handed over a clean ownership, no branding. At the time, I felt like it was just the right thing finally happening, not realising just how much that guy went above and beyond to give me that title. I'd sure like to buy him a beer (or 800) now, considering the fun I had with that bike...

(I also realise in hindsight what a d!ck the guy who sold it to me was, considering I was a broke kid and he must've known what I was getting myself into...)

Shame about the CB-1. Hang tight, another one will come along...

There was a guy here a few years ago that brought in a special Honda from out west (1000SP IIRC). He was so excited to have his dream bike and then the issues started at the MTO with a branded title. He dipped and dodged and tried whatever he could and ended up parting the bike out to try to recover some of his money. Quite sad really when something could be perfectly safe but paper keeps it off the road while we see crap everyday that is falling apart and that is legal (well at least not often enforced).

Bike carries Alberta ownership. Branded rebuilt.
Owner knew that going in. Didn't realize ON don't play that.
Don't think I want it.. ($1000 now)
I'm sure everyone here knows better than me and has had experience in the past, but I read this.

.

It doesn't say anything specific about motorcycles, so I assume it's for all vehicles. If there's something separate for motorcycles, ignore the rest of this post.

Confusing read for sure.

But in my translation, Second paragraph under Q5 says 'rebuilt' Albertan can be registered into 'Salvage' in Ontario.

Then the second paragraph under Q9 says that after passing structural and safety inspection, you can change to 'Rebuilt'.

Then Q10 kind of expands on the second paragraph of Q9, ending with a sentence that it can be legally be on road.

So, doable? I don't know how much these inspections cost but 1k for bike and going through hassle might be worth if you really want it?

Edit: I'm dumb, Q7 says you can't. Forget what I said above.

Good link.
You may have missed Q7. It's clear.

I just talked to the owner. I was going to buy it, but on 2nd thought, I'm passing.
He will take a grand for it......possibly less, I dunno.

Edit: my interpretation is that only if it's been branded as irreparable at some point, there's no avenue to legally put it on road
So you can't convert a "salvage" motorcycle as Ontario does not acknowledge they exist. It is a ghost and cannot be brought into the light.

Motorcycles
The "Salvage" and "Rebuilt" brands don't apply to motorcycles. A motorcycle is branded as "Irreparable" where there is frame damage that requires replacement.

EDIT: As Gary saw, it is even clearer in Q7 on your link.

It does in Q7, saying any motorcycles branded out of province will never be allowed to operate in Ontario, and registering them here will have the brand changed to 'Irreparable'. The last sentence, "There are no exemptions from this requirement," suggests many folks who haven't taken no for an answer...

EDIT: Whoops, too slow...

Damn, I missed Q7 for some reason.
Probably being distracted by my toddler.

That's too bad. I was hoping for some good leeway.
But then again, lots of people know more than me about these things.

Sorry if I gave false hopes to anyone.

Well there may be a path, just a long one. If you can convert the Alberta title to an unbranded title in AB, then you have a clean registration in Ontario. I haven't investigated other jurisdictions to see if/where this might be an option. Probably not likely as they should catch "rebuilt" but who knows what other jurisdictions allow (eg. can you export to friendly US state, clean the title and import to Canada).

Here's the ad with details: 2011 BMW F800 ST - Deseronto
Having looked over your ad and comparing similar online, I wouldn't lower your price any more as your bike compares very favorably IMO. I would be prepared though to haggle a LITTLE in person, people always need to feel like they got a deal.
If you can afford it, be patient. If not, dump it fast as winter is coming and buyers want even bigger deals.

Good to know, for a bit less I would buy it as a parts bike

Would love some feedback on my 2011 F800ST for sale, guys...I've got it listed at $7,000 now and it already compared well with others for sale (just lowered it, so now I've got them beat). What do you think would be reasonable? TIA :)

I think your ask is a little heavy. Nice bike and great mileage. I consider the F800ST a good all rounder but not a huge following. So with that said $7000 ask on a 9 year old bike that probably had a MSRP of $12,000 I think it’s just a little too high.

$6800 looks a ton better then $7000. If you really want it gone considering we’re in September now I personally would ask $6500 and be open to negotiate.

When I see your ad on Kijiji it shows Napanee area. I would try to get in there and edit to Belleville. Still leave the actual location as Deseronto. As someone in the GTA Belleville sounds doable to go look at a bike but Napanee seems like the other side of the world.
