Pics from our Fifi tour 2 years ago.

A year ago today we were touring the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, OH. Awesome place 1,120,000sq.ft in size. Original Memphis Belle, Stealth, SR71, the B-29 that dropped the atomic on Nagasaki, walking through space shuttles and presidential planes, etc.

I was there a few years ago. Incredible display. Unfortunately one of the hangars was closed at the time; It houses the XB-70 Valkyrie. I'm hoping to get back there once all this virus stuff has passed.

I had forgotten all about that plane until I saw it in the museum. I remembered it from my childhood in magazines and cartoons and didn't know it was an actual production plane and not just sci-fi.

the Snowbirds flew over our house here in Oakville and looped Burlington Bay on Sunday. apparently doing a Canada tour for covid entertainment. How many thousands an hr to keep a military jet in the air?

A vampire is something like $3500 an hour in fuel.

EDIT:
In 2012, they were talking about replacing the tutors by 2020 for $755,000,000. Frig me. Fuel price doesn't matter. They're cool, but let this be their farewell tour.

The tutor's make ~30% less max thrust than the Vampire. Not sure how this correlates to burn rate at cruise.

If you're feeling baller, the MIG is $5500 for 1/2 hour (including taxi time). But then you get to tell your friends you flew a Mig.

I wonder what an eject costs?
That happened in the states. Pilot inverted, guy on the fun ride reached down to hold onto something and pulled the ejection handle. On the upside, it didn't work properly and only the passenger got ejected, the pilot was able to fly the plane back. It is supposed to blow both seats.

I would not want to test a 65 year old ejection seat designed for marginal survivability with a very fit 20 year old in it.

If you go for a ride in the harvard, you have to wear a chute. It is the seat padding.

its really expensive to be patriotic.

when my FIL was in the Canadian aircraft carrier, if they'd been gone long and were less than 500miles offshore he'd have a plane fly him ashore to catch a cocktail party. They'd want the planes ashore later anyway, and nobody paid any attention to budget, let alone clearing customs.

It gets written off as a proficiency flight. Costs? Who keeps tabs anymore?

One of the guys at school was in the forces training to be a pilot. When asked what he's up to on the weekend....jets are coming here so I'll hitch a ride back to AB, and they'll fly me back on Sunday...sounded fun!

As much as i love aircraft of all types, i have never been a fan of airshows. Ancient fighter jets on a too tight budget is a recipe for trouble.
Edit: Hope the pilot is ok. Snowbirds have had 8 fatalities over the many years. Imho it's time to put the program to sleep.

I read an update that of the 2 occupants, one landed on a house and survived, the other was not so fortunate. Hopefully that report is incorrect.

RIP Capt. Jenn Casey. It turns out she was a friend of a friend. The pilot of the plane landed on the roof of a house and has serious but non life-threatening injuries.
