It is a situation that everyone will face and it is expensive!

When my FIL passed away a few years ago we went to the funeral home and they wanted 7k or so for a cremation.

funeral director said ‘since he was poor call City of Mississauga and if they don’t cover the price we can talk’

called City, they said no. Called Director told him that City said no....price went down to 3k no questions asked.

the margins are insane, and they prey on our toughest moments and at our weak points.

The death industry intrigues me and I actually contemplated getting into it in the past, but I would not have the heart to be that person who sat down with bereaved family in a room and knowingly raked them over the coals for thousands upon thousands of dollars in bogus fees and inflated charges.

$899. Buy now and use as a bookcase/storage until required.

But they all offer "Expedited shipping" for some reason, no need to think ahead. ;)

You could do that, couple years at community college and you could be the creepy guy in the basement doing the chemical injections. Or the stern faced dude at the door saying 'are you here for Mrs. xxx???' Or even in the little kitchen making egg salad sandwiches.
But you make a really basic living, all the real money is being the guy that says , " Mom would be proud your honouring her this way........"

But you make a really basic living,

Yep, from what I gathered the only person making the real big money in the industry is the people that actually own the home.

There must still be good money in it....fancy new funeral home opened up down the road from us a few years back. I was quite happy - it replaced a vacant weed infested lot that had been there for the 15 years we'd lived in the area before that. Now it's beautifully manicured all year long, complete with huge flower beds and golf green lawns in the summer.

A while ago I read an article about how organized crime was heavily invested in the funeral business in the us. That and waste management.

Great way to get rid of bodies if you own the funeral parlour!

I do recall reading about how the industry is very closed to outsiders, and to be able to open up a funeral home you must be REALLY connected and approved by the others. Not sure about the details as I'll never be in that business. But I'm sure there's shady stuff going on and no one wants newcomers to start picking up 'customers' in their territory.

While almost every town has a funeral home with a storied family name attached, they are being swallowed by a small number of giant corporations with hundreds of funeral homes under each umbrella. If people think prices are bad now, wait until the pseudo-monopoly is complete.

true ... from their names I thought they were stand-alone but all the funeral homes that I checked out were part of a conglomerate

There are still a lot of stand alone funeral parlours., but amalgamation is taking over very fast. Its volume that makes it really profitable. I have family employed in the 'hospitality' side of the business, funeral directors that meet and greet and do the paper work. They have nice lives but its not big money. A friend from high school opened a parlour in our then small town, he made a LOT of money, but he owned the place.

ever notice the funeral directors always have nice shoes?? they almost never put shoes on the body in the casket. And if your burying grandma with her wedding rings be there when they close the lid.....

yup. Left his wife with maybe $500 and the proceeds from selling his tools and car (maybe 3000$ total).

After that I promised myself I would NEVER do that to my family.

but ya....****** situation all around. Ah well. Been 5 years.

It beats leaving a bunch of assets so screwed up the family goes to fighting and is destroyed. A huge chunk of the estate is cremated by the lawyers.

It doesn't have to be a bunch of assests, everybody has stories of family that don't speak over less than 5k. or less. I wouldn't loose sleep over 5k but many would loose their minds.
Its pretty amusing to watch what sends people spinning.

When i started skydiving at age 18, my parents made me buy life insurance and a burial plot.

I havn't sky dived in years , but the helmet was actually a good idea. So many had thier feet go out from under them or dragged a bit and head bumps were a pretty usual occurance. Not everybody was gracefull.

My last jump was so long ago Orville Wrght may have been the pilot......

If you watch reruns of US police reality shows they show people getting bumped off for the price of a used pickup.

We had a guy shot here in Milton by his nephew for a family split 18 ways ? Each share was worth about 30g . His mom was going to split a 30g take with him. Rural Milton, when they used to play banjos
