It's not the number of incidents that have occurred, it's the number of potential incidents that have yet to occur. The faulty batteries are installed in far more than 74 handsets.

Would you want one of them in your house? With your family?

As for the iPhone thing...ANY device containing a lithium polymer battery can and may explode if the battery is damaged. Any phone (iPhone aside) that contains one that is dropped, bent, or damaged in some fashion is at risk for the battery exploding. The Samsung situation is quite different - no damage is necessary to trigger it, it just happens during charging.

There's a difference between a battery that burns up because it was damaged in some way vs a battery that burns up because the owner just plugged it in to recharge it.

It's ironic reading through this thread, seeing an o holy apple bias in your responses, knowing what you've said to and about the Harley crowd and their "blind" affinity for a brand.

I don't think there was anything particularly pro apple in my response, I was simply stating facts based on someones very blatantly pro-Samsung response where they almost wholy discount a manufacturing flaw that has the potential to be catastrophic through a common everyday process, yet compare it to isolated incidents by another manufacturer where (in BOTH stories) it was clearly mentioned the battery exploded after...wait for it...being damaged.

I guess "Iphone aside" in my response could could have been interpreted as being "pro Apple", and yeah, I should have said "iPhone included", since they too are not immune in the case of damaged batteries, as I mentioned..which I was very clear about when I said "ANY device".

Want to see some fun videos, go to YouTube and search for "Lipo explode" and watch what happens when people intentionally damage them. The big ones used in RC (Radio control) models are particularly interesting as they are basically a giant ball of energy, many of the battery packs for larger models being tens or hundreds of times larger than what's in an average cellphone.

Here's a good one of what happens after a LiPo is damaged in an RC crash, for example.

Kidding aside, just like the HD v Metric debate, there is no perfect product. Rock what you like; and you clearly like Apple, and defend it accordingly.. that's all I was saying. Cool vid though

Sure. There's been a couple of Model S's that have burned to the ground. The batteries are designed to not go up quite that rapidly (otherwise the cars wouldn't be burning, they would simply explode) but pretty much all Li-ion batteries have the same thermal runaway problem. Piercing the batteries or shock is bad for any of them
