Region of Peel Loud Vehicles

Heard the news report yesterday, that the Peel Regional Police announced, that they are going to be "targeting loud and modified vehicles." They said they will be targeting cars and motorcycles with modified or loud exhaust systems, which violate the noise bylaw restrictions beginning this spring. Can't find any reports on it though.

Just posting up for the "loud pipes save lives" groups may wish to avoid Peel Region. I would suspect the OPP in and around Caledon will also be taking part, in this enforcement practice.

Peel Vehicular - Excessive Noise is an ongoing issue that impacts the entire Region of Peel. 21 Division - Vehicular - Excessive Noise Campaign will run during the month of April 2016. The goal of this campaign is to ensure that vehicles are maintained to a level that complies with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. This campaign offers a proactive approach towards the reduction of noise coming from any motorized vehicle.
Objectives of the campaign include:

  • Apply a zero tolerance approach towards vehicles with improper mufflers.
  • Reduce the number of vehicles operating outside the Ontario Highway Traffic Act regarding noise violations.
  • Improve road safety, driving performance, increase awareness by encouraging drivers to properly maintain vehicles, return altered vehicles to manufacture specification and to operate motor vehicles within the regulations of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
Vehicles that are causing excessive noise distract other drivers and interfere with residents’ lawful enjoyment of their property. Join us on Twitter, @PeelPoliceMedia, as our media officers tweet from the road with insight into the campaign as it unfolds. For further information on the campaign, contact Sergeant Steve Arney at 905-453-3311 ext. 2113.

Waiting for them to blitz distracted, cell-phone using, texting drivers as aggressively...

So now when I leave work and then take the long way home through Caledon, I now have to contend with this as well. Because, as stated above, we all know Peel has some of the finest drivers around. And don't get me started on Peel police...
Same ones pull out of a Tims to a street with a median, then u turn to go north at the intersection. With no signal.
Ah. 10 more months, and then I can avoid Peel 90% of the time.
Kinda strange how there is zero tolerance starting now, yet this is the first I (any of us?) are hearing of it. You would think that there would be a grace period. Good thing my pipes aren't too loud.

"Campaign runs through April"...well only two left there and its not even prime riding season.

I live in south Mississuaga and 2 or 3 times a week I am awoken by some @ss in a car, on a Harley or a sport bike racing down my street.

To me it's selfish behaviour but it won't change.

Somewhere there has to be a bylaw that they are enforcing, and the bylaw will have to spell out specifically what constitutes excessive noise.
For example "any vehicle emitting more that 100 decibels of noise".
So if Peel cop pulls you over and he doesn't have a decibel meter, see you in court.

Police with spare time on day shift . Nothing more .

My bike is freaking loud, but within regulations.
They better have a meter on hand and know how to use it correctly.
I live in Mississauga and am respectful when I need to be in residences

I still don't understand what is so great about that area. Isn't there like just one road out there? I have my baffle's in anyways so I doubt it would be an issue.

The idea of having to navigate through the type of drivers in that area, just to ride one road is WAY more of a turn off than the threat of being pulled over so a cop can check out my pipes..

DId not Caledon near the Forks already implement this? Police have a noise meter and measure a specific distance from your pipe, at idle and at 4k rpm? I'm all for restricting excessive noise, but it must be for both bikes and cars.

This method?

I just straight piped my car yesterday. I'll still go to the forks.

They wanna go after improper mufflers? How about going after cars that are actually unsafe like on my yesterday drive with all the people missing 3 out of 4 brake lights.

They wanna talk about cars operating outside the HTA, go after the ones that might end up killing someone.

A loud vehicle would only be a nuissance for a short time (for the non enthusiast), people who complain about them just have nothing better to do and most likely break a whole bunch of road rules as if they're the king of the road to begin with.

"That car's too loud"
*Whilst talking on the phone and driving, signalling without changing lanes etc etc.

At least that's how I picture people who complain about that type of petty ****.

My bike doesn't have a tach, I'd like to know how they're going to figure out what 4KRPM sounds like.

The OPP get involved in local bylaw enforcement?

I'm a big supporter of law enforcement and such...but I have to join the chorus that might suggest that this is a waste of what appears to be already stretched police resources. There are SO many bigger issues out there that having a gaggle of enforcement officers poking microphones at motorcycles seems like a waste of time. Go check out the "Bad drivers of Ontario" video thread for but a handful of examples of where (IMHO) the police should be focusing their attention, and these videos are but a flash in the pan of the overall bigger picture in this province. Terrible drivers that are a menace on the roads or are causing accidents should demand a lot more focus than a noisy muffler.

Are obnoxiously loud motorcycles and cars annoying? Sure, but nab them as part of regular traffic enforcement vs these focused witch hunts that draw resources away from bigger issues.

police have that 'keep the peace thing' , and work for the municipality in which they are employed. 200 people send a letter to the mayor, the mayor calls the chief and we get roadside sound checks. And while your getting the soundcheck they may as well look at plate location, mirrors and handle bar height and lights.

Keep up the loud pipes saves lives , its making things so much better.

I got pulled over on my baffleless KLR on Hwy 10 in Caledon for excessive noise 3 weeks ago. The cop was nice and let me off with a warning, told me to put the baffle back in because I would get a ticket if I got pulled over again after getting the warning. I live in the area and rode all last year with no baffle and no problems so I would say they are on the look out for loud bikes. Mine wasn't that loud compared to some but I put the baffle back in to avoid the hassle.

shops use to have a wire loop they would throw on top of the engine to pick up the rpm for e-testing.
you can also pick up the rmp through a electrical outlet (eg cigarette lighter output...not that most bikes have those.)

all im saying is they probably have a way to pick up a fairly reliable rpm signal.
