Except that statement holds true for such mentality with any tool. It's the mentality part that is the issue, not the tool.
...and with that mentality the tool becomes more dangerous. Faced with a nutter my "apprehension quotient" would be like this:
1. Nutter with a rock......not too bad depending on distance.
2. Nutter with a knife....a bit worse to very bad depending on distance.

Listen and watch, you will see or hear fear being projected into most things now.
There is no fixing. There is WAY too much big money involved. Nobody is going to give that up in the US.

Response - get more guns and arm every teacher
Nothing will change in the US unless they have another civil war - half check underway with the Political system.

You are absolutely correct...without the nutters (anyone) they are inanimate objects but that argument is ridiculous. Do guns fire themselves? Do chemical weapons self-disperse? And does that make them any less lethal?
Here, I'll help you, I think that people that want to carry guns in everyday life in North America are quite paranoid. I tend not to hang around paranoid people and generally don't trust them. Paranoia is often the first step to fully fledged nutterism don't you agree?
I've been to places in Central America where everyone carried a gun but they had just come out of civil wars or nationwide skirmishes with narco-terrorists. That was understandeable and there was a totally different attitude to weapons there. Switzerland...heavily armed populace but all males have had military training... and a totally different attitude to weapons again. Never had a problem in Switzerland.
Tell me...do we have the same problems, same magnitude here as El Salvador used to have? Honduras? Columbia? If the answer to that is yes...then congrats, you've just become "the nutter".
Lastly...I'm not afraid of guns, I love guns. I have a marksman qualification from the RAF from years ago to prove it. To be clear...what bothers me is trigger happy paranoid yahoos with guns in public...and to clarify....I'm also bothered by the same yahoos with knifes, rocks or cheese graters...just not to the same extent. However...all this is moot for Canada but pertinent to the US. Right?

To the best of my knowledge I can not recall 20 kids and 6 adults being intentionally killed in 1 shot (no pun intended) with the use of a knife.

People are way too paranoid and afraid of just about everything these days.
It's odd given the easy access of information but then again we have are physically becoming fatter and lazier therefore stupid follows.
In a society we do have to put controls on things to protect the masses and as well protect the "weakest".
e.g. Should we allow 12 year girls/boys to have sex with 30 year old men/women?
Should we allow 12 year old girls/boys to enter into legal contracts such as car loans and credit cards?
We had to put limits on how much the general public can drink and drive.
Can you tell me why a civilian requires a firearm that can disperse 100 bullets a minute and to further add why do those bullets have to be armour piercing?

Fact, the rest of the shootings are performed with a long gun, with majority being done with a shotgun, followed by a hunting type firearm. Like i said previously, assault rifles, aka semi auto's with magazines bigger than 10 rounds are used so little that any researcher would have dismissed them as a statistical anomaly.
And since you had to go and stick a foot in your mouth by bringing knives into this, statistically in USA more people are killed with knives and other sharp objects than rifles.

Typical, you avoid answering my simple question. I never said there should be no guns. I simply asked why a civilian needs to possess a certain type of gun and ammo. You are kinda sounding like on of those "nutters" that jc100 mentions.
It's quite simple. Because they can. Because there is no law against it. Because the first world doesn't apply "need" to anything you possess. The default argument is why do you need an 82 inch TV?
You don't need 90 per cent of the crap in your house. You just want it and have the means to acquire it.

In the end, you can ***** and moan all you want, USA has their Constitutional Bill of Rights where the right to bear arms is not 10th, 8th or 5ths, but second, right after the right to assemble, free speech and freedom of religion. Second amendment to bear arms follows it on purpose, because without the second amendment the first one is worth as much as the paper it is written on.
