R1 and GSXR Crash - Good example of how not to ride on the street.

The riders were clearly speeding, but the Merc driver should have seen them.

It started pulling in front of the riders when they were less than 100 meters from the car - well within viewing distance. Given the intersection style, the driver only needs to check a single direction of traffic - the one they're coming from.

The riders did somewhat try and avoid the car - but they likely initially thought that the car wouldn't pull in front of them, or would only slowly roll to go behind them. The riders did start to move to the right to try and go in front of the car, but the driver kept going and hit them.

My quick notes:
1. Driver turning left is always at fault, regardless of oncoming traffic speed.
2. Riders are going beyond the speed limit, but I wouldn't say they were going crazy fast.
3. Driver pulls into oncoming traffic while bikes are ~100m away
4. Bikes try and swerve, thinking the driver will stop, but they don't.

I don't know if people realize what sort of vision standards there are for people driving. It's a Merc, so I'm going to make the assumption that they're old. There are no standards for testing vision in drivers after they have their full G license, until they are 85 (?). If they don't go for regular eye exams, or wear their glasses like they should, their vision could be frighteningly low. They were quite possibly looking at the bikes and didn't see them. Really, I believe if the driver were paying attention, they wouldn't have pulled out in traffic - it was a wide open view.

actually every time you go to renew your license they check your vision

Motorcyclists need to get this mentality out of their heads....when you're out on the road..it doesn't matter who has the right of way or who is right or wrong.... You're going to lose every time against a car. "Right of way" is not some magic shield against dumb drivers.

^^ A-phucking-men bro.

LOOK HOW SLOW the damn Merc is going, it even looks as if the stupid cager slows down to a near stop in the middle of the road. Ugh, what an indecisive pansy.

As for the riders, that's just the risk you take when you speed. First guy was lucky enough to get tossed instead of crushed, the sheer force of impact actually spun the car a bit, that's pretty crazy.

I can't stand it when left turn vehicles don't clear the intersection as fast as they can. Some drivers take their sweet time.

The car probably saw them, but didn't expect them to be going more than double the speed limit...

Untrue. My girlfriend is an Optometry student and she has pointed out some pretty scary things about the current laws surrounding vision and driving.

She has also told me of a few patients that come in and can't read any of the letters on the chart - including the huge 'E' at the top. They don't drive with their glasses on, and said they just use them to watch TV.

I'm not picking one side or the other here and I agree that fault is of no concern if you're dead, however, I'm holding a copy of the Ontario FDR in my hand and can assure you that it does not reference speed at any point. The left turn vehicle is at fault. That's it. You can fight the HTA (or in more serious cases CC) charges based on speed and outside circumstances, but 'fault' is determined by insurance companies and this is a black and white situation.

Correct. My mom was involved in an accident about 5 years ago, and I was in the car. She pulled out of a driveway on a back road, and then got hit in the back by another car. The skidmarks leading up to the crash were something like 200 feet long, so they were going very, very fast. Their car bounced off my mom's car, and into a driveway where it rolled over. The driver was found to be not at fault, because my mom was turning left, nullifying any argument that they were going too fast.

Absolutely. The person to be at fault is still up for debate. She's going to bare most of the responsibility for this seeing as how she had a yield sign. But, we were speeding excessively so it's likely that we will bare 10-30% of blame for this. The insurance companies and my attorney have the footage you see, and more. We crested the top of the hill at 87 mph. I approached the yield sign at 79 MPH. Way too fast. These readings are after a 6% decrease of the speedometer. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Someone from Reddit had contacted the guy from Youtube to ask about the video, and the above is his response.

The car probably saw them, but didn't expect them to be going more than double the speed limit...

The speed limit is 55, and they were going 79 on approach. That is far from double the speed limit.

You were saying old people need to get their eyes checked more often? Looks like 90 to me.

That is a generous space for the driver to make a left turn safely if they were only travelling lets say 10mph over the limit, but not at 90 which the driver was certainly not expecting...

Less than half a second before this point in the video the R1's speedo was at 99mph, let off the throttle down to 95, then 90, and then he started braking very lightly.

Id say 99mph is close enough to double the speed limit.

Where the hell do you guys go to renew your license? Every time ive done it i had to do an eye test

Haven't done an eye test since I got my G2 and that's about 10 years ago?

I KNOW! In the screenshot a couple posts up, you can see the white car already making the turn well before the bikes arrive! MAKE THE TURN! FINISH IT! Above all else that happens here, that irks me the most. The bikes were speeding, but the car was CRAWLING across an oncoming lane.

My license almost expired, renewed it and they didn't ask anything else.
Unless you wear glasses, they do an eye check? lol

Lots of arguing on this video.

1. You shouldn't be going at that rate of speed.
2. If you do, you will get it sooner or later no matter who is right or wrong.
3. Lesson learned.

Because not everybody functions at the razor sharp level as young people. That needs to be taken into account. I can just imagine the car driver going "huh?! wdf? and being otherwise perplexed. Not to mention the pills old people are on.
If you ride in a fashion assuming other people will do the right thing............

Maybe if you left the white cane and the dog at home they'd give you a pass on the test.

Sorry, couldn't help myselft.:p

BTW....... in 40 years of having a license I'm never had a repeat eye test.

Come on, give me a break.......... Older drivers (what do you classify as old? 50? 60? or 95? ) may have slightly slower response times but decades of driving experieince may well (not always I know) mean that when they react they do the right thing vs grabbing the brakes with lightning fast reaction times of 0.18 seconds and then riding terrified and fixated into the side of the car.

777 Bay St.

I probably don't get the test because I'm devastatingly handsome, I can make an impression on people sometimes, I get free stuff...

Decades of driving can mean driving on auto pilot sometimes or often. Do you think this person blocked the riders on purpose? Don't take for granted drivers will do the expected is all I'm saying. That could save u a*z.

I don't get it. They were speeding but the car made an illegal left turn; the car was 100% at fault yet people are blaming the riders.
It's GTAM. This forum is full of Tim Horton posers who always blame the rider. Makes you wonder why they are even on a motorcycle forum.

And there are people who are blind to see any wrong doing ever when a motorcycle is involved. Some common sense goes a long way
