1000km inspection and oil change Honda CBR250 @ dealership

Hello. Just took my bike in and was told the price was going to be $500. Does this seem high? Or is this the usual cost. Saw a thread from 2011 which stated they paid 200 at dealership for the same bike. Not sure which dealership, but I brought mine to the bowmanville Honda. If this is overpriced is there really anything I can do to get it lowered now that they have my bike? Any opinions and help would be great. Thanks, Ian.

Was told they would check the valves and that was about it. Not really sure if thats a $500 job or not, or if other things will be done as well. First bike and deffantly was not expecting it to cost this much.

Well if that is the cost of it so be it. Also mentioned to them that I was having issues gearing down every once and a while. Just doesn't want to go down at all when in 6th and gearing down for a complete stop at a red light or stop sign. Hope that is fixed for the price or is covered by warranty. Thanks for the help so far guys.

Markham outdoor power said there is no need to check the valves, even if the manual says otherwise, and that it's a 4 hr job, $400. I paid $200, so I guess $500 including valve check is not bad.

According to the manual, Oil change, and a bunch of inspection: valve clearance, engine idle speed, brakes, clutch, nuts/bolts, steering head bearings.

If you're not mechanically inclined, you can do all the checks (except valves) yourself, including the oil change.

Bring your bike somewhere else (Kneedragger88 on this forum) for the valve check. Personally, I don't think your valves will be out of spec on a new bike with 1000km on it.

or if you don't want to do the work yourself, post up your location and offer some booze or doughnuts or something and there will be plenty of people here that will help you out.

I paid $220 for the 1000km service and they claimed that they checked the valves to see if they needed adjusting or not. This was at Ready Honda, I was very happy with their service.

Well seems like I will have to bite the bullet on this one but will defiantly come here FIRST before bring my bike anywhere. They also made it seem I had to bring it back to them at 1000km for warranty reasons. Is this usually the case? Same with oil changes. If I do them myself will this affect my warranty? A lot of noob questions, probably answered on here already, but I am when it comes to these things. Anyways, thanks again for all the quick replies and info.

Yikes...Brampton Powersports quoted $370 and that included the valve clearance check. You are getting hosed for sure.

couldn't his warranty be in trouble if he does his 1000km service outside of the shop?

As far as I know, if you keep receipts and log the work you've done, there will be no warranty issues.

Besides, paying for an engine idle speed check? That's just highway robbery.

No you can do your own work and they can not deny warranty because of it they would have to prove it failed because maintenance was not done at all.

IIRC, Markham quoted me $530 with HST for the full check, and Clarington wanted around $465 with HST. Luckily I had sales include free first service when I bought the bike, so I managed to escape this one (and plan on doing all future oil changes myself until I trade up).

If Brampton will do it for $370 I definitely say go there. Clarington also did tell they the did adjust the valves, but I'm not sure I 100% believe them (it was the guy manning the desk who said this not the tech). Bike does seem to run smoother after the service though, and is a lot less jerky in first.

I paid around $150 for the first service at North Bay Cycle for my wifes cbr 250 last year. It isnt much more than an oil change and checking to make sure nothing has come loose or out of adjustment.

I don't know how they can justify $500 dollars they must charge over $200 an hour for shop rate.

EDIT: My wife dug up the receipt it was $114.34 with $68 being labour

500 sounds like too much, dealers usually are looking to rip you apart. I plan on doing everything myself, I do have a couple of years of experience working on cars. but you can do most of the service yourself oil changes and what not are really simple. and over time you may be ready to take on the valves.
