Prefer 4WD. Want crew cab. Automatic. It's to be used as a bit of a local commuter during the week and then to tow my 5 x 10 trailer to the track through the season with 2 bikes in it and possibly a third in the truck bed.

There's a ton of stuff for sale but I was looking for recommendations based on towing power and fuel economy. I may well be upgrading to a bigger trailer in the summer.

1st Gen Avalanche or early 2000's F150.

As far as your acceptance criteria goes.. Good price, fuel economy, towing power.. pick two.

A Ranger with a 4.0L will tow a 5x10 with two bikes, a third in the bed might be a bit much, but as far as small trucks go the 4.0L is a pig.

The S10 Extreme won't satisfy your needs.

I am on my second GMC Canyon now and have not had any issues you would be better to get a 2wd as the 4x4 is more to buy and fix. You should be able to find a 2006 Canyon or Colorado 5 cyl 2wd with around 180000k for that price. My 2006 is a 5 cylinder and gets decent economy (10L per 100km) and is at 160000 kms with no major issues. My 2011 is a 5.3 V8 and gets around 12L per 100kms.

GMC SIERRA ...good 1/2 TON trucks...they came with a V6 or V8

Ford F150's (not a fan, but great deals)

ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN PURCHASING A USED VEHICLE....below are just examples...the F150's seem like a better bang for buck

LONG BED - 158K - http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1999-Ford-F-150-Long-Bed-W0QQAdIdZ348608218 - $6000

CERT + EMISSION + NEW TRANS + CLEAN - 144K - http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...ord-F-150-4x4-Pickup-Truck-W0QQAdIdZ342342237 $5500

For that money GM or a Ford, not a big fan of Dodge's with higher mileage. I would lean towards a GM with those kind of miles (I see a lot of 4.6/5.4 Fords that have some rod knock) but for $5000 I would look at as many trucks as possible and just pick the one in the best condition.

yeah, those sierra's / silverado's without the z71 package, just basic work trucks/fleet trucks have high miliage and last forever....dont see too many older dodges around anymore.

Well, I went in a bit of a different direction and bought a 2011 Nissan Frontier SL with the crew cab and 6ft bed. I took it to the track yesterday towing my new 6 x 12 trailer and it was good. Great drive, tows easy and was relatively good on gas for what it was doing. The surprising thing was that the gas consumption between towing the trailer empty and loaded with 2 bikes, 2 canopies tool boxes etc etc was basically the same. Shame I might have to sell it!!

I was lookin to buy a new full size truck...went in a different directon too...bought my daughter a 04 Civic for $3500 and spent almost $2500 on my old 04 Canyon 5cyl. to fix her back up...front tires front end work ...pulling the hub$ and brakes. Runs and drives great and so does the Civic with new timing belt and waterpump as it just passed 200k. Guess the new truck will have to wait.
