Saw a guy wearing one of those wing suits yesterday at the skydive and I was thinking "damn I wanna try that!".

It's a flying squirrel!!

Cool. This kinda goes along with the bucket list thread that link has up. I'd probably slot this in near the end of my list just in case it doesn't quite work out.

woah! simply, woah!

on the bucket list...but i'm with Dan on this one :P

Lol,only a few thousand practice jumps to go.
Btw,congrats to those that made their first jump at Burnaby.Wish i could have been there to cheer ya on.

Considering that he can only go right, left or down the low altitude above ground stuff is insane. The typical wing suit has a glide ratio of about 2.5 to 1 although his seems to have more area than others I have seen.

I'm not sure of his luck to skill ratio. There's a video around of a guy being off his glide ratio and he hit a bridge. You don't see the impact but you hear it.

I want to know how much he planned that or whether he just thought "yeah, looks like it might work OK". To me it seems like he was within the margin of error when he was about 10ft from the ground in that one part. A small downdraft or wrong angle of attack and he's doing a good impression of a stone skimming on a lake. Either way, extremely cool.

Isn't there something called ground effect when you glide close enough to the ground? A very small effect that creates the effect of a cushion of air underneath you. Anyway, not something I'd rely on.

His ultimate goal is to land a skydive without a parachute.I remember talking about this with friends 30 years ago over many beers after a days jumping.
Here's a link to a good interview with Jeb Corless and his plans.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkgJndUtUsY

crazy! i saw the first wingsuite video 4 years ago and really looked into it but seems like unless youre a well seasoned jumper, you cant wingsuite. watching these videos makes riding look like childs play lol

I forgot about that but IIRC for the plane I had it came into effect at about the same distance as the wing span. If the suit had a span of 6 feet you're cutting it close. It was more of an issue on take-off when an overloaded plane would lift off 20-30 feet but not be able to climb to clear obstacles ahead.

I'm sure they are starting to work the aerodynamics of the suits to up the performance. I don't know if they can dive fast enough to build up enough speed for some climb burst or minimal amount of level flight.
