worried about rear tire - opinions please

OP. I wouldn't even ride that tire to the corner gas station.

I knew a guy who took off his rear brake to save weight as well. To save weight.
But we both had TL1000's.
Rear brake is useless on a TL1000.
There is so much enging brake that you never used it.

But you still use the engine to brake.
Even with the slipper clutch, you could still lock up the back wheel.

I've had 2 TLS, 1 TLR, 1 Vstrom, and now an SV1000S.
You are correct, the engine braking is very strong.

But in emergency braking , to settle the rear on corner entry, or especially emergency braking in the rain it's absolutely not enough.

And I never, ever, had my rear wheel lock up on any of them, your slipper clutch needs servicing.
 
You are not downshifting hard enough.
Go try again.

Yeah, I thought so.
Just because it's a slipper clutch, doesn't mean that you can't lock up the back wheel when you want to.

Can't say I've ever had the urge to want to use my engine to lock the rear wheel but each their own I guess.
 
I recently went through the same dilemma. My rear tire Dunlop qualifier I got 15,000km and developed the same cords showing on one side. Although I rode for about 1000 km from when it first showed It was hardly enjoyable. E.g Tire burst back of my mind, shy with leaning it over or having to brake hard.
FOr peace of mind just replace it, i don't thibk getting to the shop will be a prob on those.
 
I'm sorry, but anybody who rides on a tire with cords showing has a death wish, and anybody encouraging him to do so should ............................................................................
 
If nothing more can be said, OP you've got balls to ride on that! I would be a nervous wreck every moment of the trip on that thing. :)
 
I rode on a tire that was cords half way around the tire from Peterborough to Orangeville. Then I did a burnout which took the rubber on the good half and melted it over the cords. Good to go.

Not smart, but I had no other way to get there to change the tire. Once you take the tire off you realize how thin the cords are lol.

lol this thread is a trip,

update:

I am still alive. I took weston all the way down to rosey toes friday morning, took it slow and didn't use the rear brake. got a Pirelli Angel ST 180/55 on in amazing shape installed and balanced for 90 bucks. will def last out the season and then some.

appreciated the comments good or bad, i did have the worst feeling in the pit of my stomach the whole time, but glad i got a safe tire on now.
