Fred gets snipped in a few months. The kids don't appreciate when he lays on them and they can feel his balls.

Ya, they do - dogs and cats are castrated which cuts off production of the hormones that drive reproductive behaviours.

They won’t go nuts when they smell a ***** in heat, will be less aggressive, and most loose their enthusiasm for dry humping.

Well I’ll be damned. Glad to have kept mine then.

Now need diapers and more careful during walks. Seeing red spots around the house.

There’s lots of debate of spaying before or post first heat. Too late now to decide.

Humans get tubes cut, animals get balls removed. For dogs/cats that's an expensive operation. For livestock, it's an elastic band. They sell rubber balls for owners that want their dogs to have something swinging. Iirc Humans can use them too if they lose a ball and want balance back.

They place we got Fred likes to neuter around a year old. Some places do it really early. Like with the girls, there is some debate over growth/behaviour benefits/downsides. They said if he got too humpy, call them and they do it earlier.
 
With male dogs they like to leave them with nuts until they are fully grown/ developed. It can be a challenge . Females my vet says before first heat / or after doesn’t really matter . Puppies wearing the cone of shame can be harder to manage around the house than a grown dog . Too rambunctious.

Our vet also told us before or after doesn't matter.

I have no backing on this, but feel that giving her at least the first heat allows for more development...but I'm no vet, and when the vet says it doesn't really make a difference...only the walks will be more annoying with dogs trying to mount her.

That and the blood. Diapers on order.
 
We didn't use diapers with our female.

We used an old pair of underwear from my son.
The slit in the crotch area was perfect for her tail to go through.

Her first hear was the worse. Now, it's barely anything.
 
Almost every day since I moved here 7-8 months ago.. on my morning walks.. I run into a lady with 2 small dogs.. almost always off leash. Whenever we run into them.. they run up to my dog, barking and putting on a little dog show.. and each time I see them coming.. I pull my dog in tight and hold one of her ears so she won’t move.. the little dogs get a sniff and move on. A couple of times she has said things to me like.. they’re friendly.. they’re not going to do anything to your dog, the usual things
 The first time, I asked her to call them back, told her mines not cool with it.. she tried, couldn’t.. and I haven’t said anything since. I got the impression she thinks it’s a joke.
Yesterday.. I met her husband.. same routine.. he’s walking them off leash.. they run up on mine.. etc. unlike her, he came over to shoo them away
 he stops, looks at my dog.. moves faster to get his dogs.. gets them. Then he turns back to me.. and says..
“I’m so sorry man” looks at my dog again.. and tells me.. his wife makes fun of me, thinks I’m wacko for the way I react to their dogs approaching mine.. she thinks my dog is scared of hers.. “but that’s not it, is it”..
I replied.. “not at all.. quite the opposite.. I’m protecting yours”
“Do you think she’d attack them?”
“100% certain.. if I let her”
“Is that a pitbull?”
“Technically.. no.. but close.. very similar”
just then.. my neighbors 4 lb Yorkie comes over, my dog lays on her back.. and the Yorkie jumps all over her, nipping at her.. she just rolls around and lets it.. (that’s how she plays with tiny dogs)
“I thought she wasn’t friendly?”
“I never said that.. she gets along with a lot of dogs.. but your dogs have been doing that to her for months”
“I’ll talk to my wife.. have a good walk, etc..”
This am.. the two little dogs run up on mine.. with the lady walking behind them.. and she give me attitude saying something like”you shouldn’t have that dog”
“Me and my dog aren’t the problem mame”
“You’re an *******”
“Yeah.. but your lucky I’m an ******* that doesn’t want to see your dogs get hurt or worse”
I wonder if she’ll let them do it again tomorrow?

That's so frustrating. I only run into one person with 2 dogs that are off leash, but the second the guy says 'no, other way' to his dogs they turn away and cross the street to the other side, so I'm fairly ok with that.

The training we're starting now, the owner states proudly how his dog is always off leash even downtown. No doubt it's well trained.

In the end, it's a dog. Anything can happen, and I can't understand why people are so content with letting them off leash.

It's simply to protect everyone and their animals from injury.

There's quite a few off leashers around here.. but almost all of them are good about it... and have control. I'm not against it in general.. not at all... but that particular lady is stupid about it and thinks everyone else should make way. Admittedly, I do off leash mine occasionally.. at 12-2am ish in the middle of Hungry Hollow.. no one else goes in there at those times.

Good to know!

Unfortunately if I let my dog off leash currently...she ain't coming back.
 
My little girl dog doesn’t like being sniffed or approached by dogs off leash that she doesn’t know or like. She’s also built like a sumo wrestler and has no issue whatsoever in letting any dog have the good news that ensures they never do it again or that their owners never speak to us again. We warn anyone with off leash dogs. Most people leash their dogs, some don’t.

She’s older now but will still make her opinions known. I don’t want dogs coming up to her as she’s unsteady on her feet now though.

I don’t like off leash dogs in places where they aren’t allowed. I’ve had too many close calls on bikes or seen the dogs tear after wildlife etc.

My dog is well trained and friendly, he can walk off leash
 but we don’t do it because of aggressive bylaw enforcement.

For decades locals have let their dogs run in local parks - thats over now the leash gestapo are on a mission in Markham.
