Where to get a puppy?

I like to choose robust breeds. You can never tell, but picking certain breeds comes with odds stacked in the vets favor.

I’ve been lucky. My last 3 dogs saw vets for shots and an annual checkup - all 3 lived past their expiry dates. My cat is 15, only time he’s needed a vet was to see him up after a few scraps. He’s already used up his 9 lives annd getting tired - I imagine his next trip will be to checkout.

Last dog was a mutt. Lots of black lab and chocolate lab, probably some hound and maybe some Ridgeback.

Current dog is a doodle mutt.

I’ll always have pet insurance going forward. We didn’t have it for one dog years ago and ended up spending thousands on cancer surgery. Had it for the recent dogs. One passed away recently but he more or less made it even with payments and his medical bills over the years. His sister needs arthritis and pain meds every day. She’ll need an x ray for a paw issue soon and that’s covered.

Insurance is also assurance that we won’t be left short in an emergency. Everyone says “put x dollars away in a fund for your pets instead” and that’s fine if you’re disciplined like that but we aren’t. Also if you have an issue early on in your fund you’re still screwed.

Insurance is always a gamble. The insurance companies have worked hard to make sure they are the ones that win in the end, not you. I understand that but the peace of mind is worth the gamble to me.

One tip, dental care is often not covered and dental care for pets is incredibly pricey. Our dogs have had raw carrots in their food since they were puppies and also had some chew treats that cleaned their teeth. Their teeth were perfect from that. Don’t get the super hard ones as they can crack teeth.
Honestly, that read like people insurance for a lot of Americans. Instead of high premiums and co pays they just deal with things as they come. I doubt many of them save the tax difference between here and the USA.

I asked one grass roots type what he'd do if hit with a large expense and he said he'd just sell something. One less pickup on the front lawn I guess.

We've never had expensive to purchase pets and been lucky running without insurance. If we got a pet I think I'd bank the premiums and self insure.

Life is different when the animal is livestock. That means insuring your livelihood.

Not looking forward to the bill to have mine neutered.

On a separate note, speaking to a vet regarding flea and tick, the stuff they recommend is actually a poison the animals consume and then it kills the flea and tick when they are on the animal. The affects of the stuff on animals themselves isn’t provided. 🤷‍♂️

Upside to the rescue we bought was it included snip snip when it's time.

Yes, flea and tick medicine kills the parasites when they bite. There are tons of ticks near my brother so they use both collar/topical to minimize bites and the meds to kill the ones that are pernicious.

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The two main meds are an organophorous compound you spread on the skin of the dog but that is deadly to cats and not so nice if the dog ingests it (that’s why it’s spread along the spine) or the chewable meds that work once the tick or flea bites. The chewables seem pretty well tolerated. We got the chewables after using the topical stuff for years. Bonus with the chewables is that they treat a whole bunch of different things, not just fleas and ticks.

We use Simparica Trio, its flea/tick, heartworm and intestinal worm pevention.

Hope the dog stays under 120lbs (biggest single dose they make), Frank is 195lbs so he has to take 2 pills each month. :ROFLMAO:

I'm hoping for 65 lbs or less. He was 24 lbs 2 mos ago and now he is 38 lbs@5 mo old. We'll see. I'm safe from >120 I think.

What does he weigh I would have to convince the wife but looks like a dog I would love to have on the farm

Based on my experience with Huskies, Im guessing around 40lbs. He's friendly, won't come inside or into a vehicle (most rez dogs learn those rules at from the end of a boot). They need space, like to explore, socialize well with other dogs, but don't wander far from their food sources. I believe he's neutered - a vet crew comes thru every once in a while and snips every dog that can get their scalpels on.

My friend who does the rescues has airlifted and rehomed 100+ dogs from Kacheshewan since it was evacuated, 500 to go!

Im heading back to Attawapiskat next week, I'll send more picks and find out his age (I believe he's just over 2 yrs old) and any other particulars. Our pilot brings flies the dogs back for free and there's no cost or qualifications in adopting them.

This little fella is new, 6 weeks old -- a stray that's still hanging with his single mom. It was -46 when I took this pic -- he came by looking for a treat and a scratch. They have never seen indoors.

Thats the fam (mom). The one with his butt facing the screen is from the pic before. The rest of the litter is gone, a lot of them freeze this time of year.
