What do you use to get rid of the bad smells from your riding boots...?

I've got a set of waterproof boots (Alpinestars Ridge) that I"ve had for a few years. They've begun to "smell" to say the least after my last tour. Taking them off and putting them on is like dayummmm....5 secs and i can smell it on my socks already.

I've soaked the entire boot inside/out used dishsoap to try getting rid of the odor but it's still there even after leaving them to dry outside for a few days.

What do you guys use to get rid of the smell? The boots are still in decent shape so i don't want to buy a new set but I think i might as it reaks.

Really good trick is to take an old sock. Cut it about 3 inches from the toe area. Fill it with baking soda and close it up and put it in your boots. Should remove the smell after leaving it overnight.

Very good idea.

OP - I have the same boot and even though I don't have the same problem I just use a little gold bond foot powder on longer rides to keep the perspiration down.

You can also try febreeze. I spray a little on the outside of my saddle bags to get rid of the gas smell after a long ride. The febreeze may help with the boot odor too.

Take them to a sporting goods store that fumigates hockey gear. Will smell better after. Have you got jungle foot rot between your toes? :snorting:

+1 to the above. The smell is coming from bacteria..you need to kill the bacteria.

I just us the yellow bottle Scholls foot powder after every ride and that keeps them smelling fresh. You may need to fumigate first and then maintain.

This topic is very misleading. I thought you had feminine hygiene Issues. LOL

If you know that you'll be wearing the boots for a lengthy period of time, just put a good amount of foot powder in there beforehand...

That way they won't get damp/stinky in the first place.

The hockey equipment cleaning is a good idea, but also get some cedar shoe trees, they take the moisture out of the boots that cause the bacteria to form. If they are ever damp inside, stuff them with newspaper to dry them out. The problem with waterproof boots is that they do not have ventilation so mostiture remains in them.

I just shower regularly and nothing ever smells bad. Everything always smells like fine cologne.

Baking soda to rid the initial smell, Odour Eaters insoles to keep it at bay after, along with Scholl's foot powder.
Febreeze works by numbing your odor sensors, not really a long term solution.

If you have a large sized freezer shove them in a plastic grocery bag and leave them in there over night. Or wait until the temp will drop below zero and leave them outside overnight. Freezing the boots kills all the bacteria inside.
