I wouldn't take it personally there are people on here with strong opinions about safety and what should and shouldn't be worn. You're your own decision maker and should in the end buy what you like.
There's a system called SHARP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHARP_(helmet_ratings)) it's used in the UK for helmet ratings. They do their own 3rd party testing. While they don't do every helmet on the market it can give you an indication of the kind of safety you'll get with a given "style" of helmet.
Check it out maybe you can get an idea of the kind of protection it offers.
