Warning. OPP Bait and switch tactics on the 401

Would have been great to catch all that on a dash cam.

23 SUV's, marked and unmarked cruisers and paddy wagon sitting at Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia today wasting your tax dollars.

That's a little hypocritical in this thread; people complaining that their tax dollars could be better spent than on HTA stuff then complaining that they're in location to prevent something from flaring up again, which of course also means all those cruisers weren't on the highways.

Too bad it was a bad day for riding, especially for me on my dirt bike riding ATV trails in the mud with 6 ATV's, ug. Probably shocked the OPP when we came out of the trees right into their out of the way staging area a few km's from the DCE (seeing as 6 years ago the protestors were using ATV's all over the place).

It's very simple to me...entrapment issues or not...they will never catch me doing even close to 150km/hr.

I drive my car a lot for work, around 50,000km per year and my car is in the airport terminal parking half the time so that is saying something.

I just sit to the right and set the cruise on the 401 at 115 or so, absolute maximum...I never have to worry about the police, I still get where I'm going on good enough time. If I see them I hit cancel and drift down to below 110...wait 5-10 minutes then hit resume.

Even on a bike, who needs the stress of the cops, the wind etc. at 150km/hr on a long drive to Montreal.

Chill out with guys like me in the right lane and live longer.

I drove 7 hours yesterday and never dropped my speed from 124km/h even when I passed cops in the center median. That's the real speed of the 401 today, unless you happen upon police on a mission/in need of quota points.

So let me get this straight you were following behind an OPP Cruiser in the rain doing between 130km - 150km/hr from Brockville to Kingston and didn't get pulled over and you are complaining? Common sense just isnt so common these days.

I've been booked by a white unmarked police sedan filled with 3 uniformed officers. They must've been on a stake out because I was test riding my buddy's bike(no insurance, no plates) in my neighbourhood just to get the feel for it and I didn't realize they were police until I turned around to get into the drive way and they were blocking my path with all 3 of them surrounding me. We got the **** scared out've us cuz it's a pretty huge fine and hefty penalties. Luckily they were cool cops and understood our situation and let us go #Phew#.

I have serious issues with unmarked traffic enforcement to begin with. Its nothing more then a money grab. If they were truly "keeping things safe" they would just have more marked cars on the road.

This is my signature

Agreed. I've seen that in other countries, where they're doing a bit under the speed limit in the right lane, with the cherries on (in most of the world, the cherries mean "caution", the siren means "pull over").. If you pass them while doing the (much more reasonable) speed limit, you're fine. If you pass them while doing 20 over, you end up with a ticket. Also, I've noticed them doing it more in areas where you need to slow down, such as densely populated areas and mountain passes as opposed to the areas where it's safe to speed up a bit if your vehicle/fuel budget can handle it.

The biggest problem I have with undercover traffic enforcement isn't even to do with them directly.

I'm concerned about impersonation...I have had 2-3 encounters with aggressive drivers who impersonated a police officer.
At least in a convincing enough way that they never said they were, but show you a fake badge and start ranting to you about some perceived injustice. Sometimes these guys have a flashing light that plugs in to the lighter...or even built in lights that flash red etc.

Next time something like this happens to me, they are going to be talking to a real police officer.

I'm at a point where unless a car is obviously a police car, marked or full uniform inside etc. I'm just not pulling over. I'll call 911 and keep driving at a safe speed and try to find a marked officer.

Now that you mention that, what is the protocol if a suspicious unmarked car lights up and tries to pull you over? Can you call in and see if it's actually the police or do you have to pull over?

That's not an answer. Me personally, I wave at them and clear off. I have no way to tell if they are trying to kill me, waste my time, or are an enforcement officer - but I repeat myself.

Yea thats sounds funny. I live in this area and I think it is odd that an OPP would do radar through the three different detachment areas that the OP said he drove through

Personally to me it depends how suspicious it is...I would rather make a mistake and have an angry police officer than make the opposite mistake and get beaten down with a tire iron and/or have my bike stolen. I can always try to justify my actions to the police later...and in the worst case a judge.

As long as you aren't doing 200km/hr to get away they probably aren't going to be too ****** off with you.

It's impossible to call in on a bike and see if they are legit, unless you have a bluetooth helmet, I don't.

I'd love to see that response in court. Or when you have 10 cruisers plowing you in the wall.

Why did you stop the day you got tagged by that unmarked cruiser on the 401 Westbound at Allen when running the shoulder?

I'd happily give it, and stick by it. And I guess you have no idea where or how I ride, so ... fantasize on.

It would work like a charm even with half-competent legal defense.
