Used '06 V-Strom 650, common issues, things to look for?

May be going to look at one. Anything to watch out for?

I think they have weak regulator / rectifiersn if they share the same as the SV650.

Mechanically, no, there's nothing specific to the model to watch for. Put gas and oil in it and it'll run forever.

Lots of people encounter helmet buffeting, so an adjustable Madstad bracket is a plus. Or you can take the shield off completely or get a shorty Moose Racing shield and avoid the problem entirely. Swapping over to bar-end mirrors will also reduce the wind noise a surprising amount.

Broken turn signals when they tip over.

I had an '06 for a while - it does have a slightly lower alternator output than the newer models after '08 I think, but I was still able to run full heated gear and it was fine. It was a solid bike and I really liked it. V-Tom did about 225,000km on his before he upgraded and I had just under 100k on mine before I wrote it off.

If you have a link to the ad, post it up and we can let you know what is good and not good for aftermarket stuff there.

Yeah good idea - put the ad up.
They are tough durable machines....I enjoy my 2010.

If you have the chance ...ABS would be a better choice but will cost more.

Asides from the stock seat, that looks like a well sorted out bike. I personally don't like the stock mirrors, so I swap them out for the same ones that are on the Kawi lines like the Versys and Z series. I also find a fork brace really helps stabilize the bike on harder cornering and in the wind. Congrats!

In my hands now. The seller misadvertised the mileage, it's actually 50k km, not 75k km, win! Has a fork brace on it already, so don't need to do that.

Few things I've noticed so far, the Audiovox cruise won't set the speed so will have to troubleshoot that. The accessory wiring is butchered, will strip it down at some point and clean it up. Right mirror builds up some condensation behind the glass, any fixes without replacing it? The handlebars are higher and further back than stock, not sure I like them, think I'll try to find a set of OEM bars. Also need a Givi topcase mount if someone has one.

Otherwise nice bike, handles surprisingly well, power is... sufficient, but not great.

I remember a while ago you gave me a set of hippo hands type things for free because you didn't want them. I have a set of brand new stock mirrors that I never used because I prefer either the KTM Duke Mirrors or the Kawi mirrors. If you want that right mirror, it's yours if you want to take your bike for a spin over to my neck of the woods or downtown where I work.

I found the stack bars weak - I swapped them out for a set of Pro Taper bars which prefer much more.

Power being sufficient is correct - just enough to not get into too much trouble.

Thanks Shane, very generous of you, will shoot you a PM next time I'm downtown.

Most likely you, rather than the bike. When did you have not great power?

Well considering he owns an fz1 and a KTM sumo, I get what he means.

Monolock or Monokey? I have a used Monolock one, not using it since I bought a bigger case for my Strom and it is Monokey. It's too much of a pain to switch back and forth.

It's not that the bike is particularly slow, just doesn't have that kick in the gut I'm used to. Bike is actually so smooth, I constantly find myself well past the speed limit. US speedo doesn't help.

Thank you, but I need a Monokey for my E52.

My 2009 seems to have an issue with clutches. Needs frequent adjustment under the cover.

Almost done it's maiden trip to Virginia, grabbing a coffee in Buffalo before heading back.

Only issue I've found is the engine has started bogging on wide open throttle around 8-10k km. Google tells me it's probably an issue with the fuel filter, will have to fix it.

Where is that road sign? I want to go there.

I have a baseball cap with that pic on the front of it and on the back it says: Enjoy the view, watch the road
