Toronto City to Charge for Street Side Parking!!

During the interim period before the pay-per-plate technology is introduced, will we be restricted to the designated areas? It seems the designated 300 spaces is a good start (even if it turns out to be insufficient), but the existing exemptions should remain in effect for when the designated spots are all taken, or for when parking in an area not in close proximity to designated spots.

Crack aint cheap.

lol ;-) took me a while to get that one

I didn't get it until you posted this.....!

The creation of the dedicated spaces may be a perfect cover for some excavation and repaving. Perfect locations to hide things like crack pipes, old cell phones, drug dealers, etc.

did you read the last couple of paragraphs? It's just a recomendation. They aren't charging yet. Still has to go to council.

Lots of mention about this being considered due to illegal parking of motorcycles on sidewalks and boulavards. ie scooters.

I did notice that....and I think it's another frustrating example of a simplified solution that does nothing to address the real problem. If the problem is illegal parking, crack down on illegal parking.
If the problem is declining revenues, charge the cagers more ;)

I predict we will get what makes the City money.
They will ease the system in an start removing the free spaces later.

Maybe while council is discussing this they can also discuss HOV lanes.

I wonder how many riders have contacted their councillor about this. My guess is near zero. A lot of stuff happends in Toronto because voters are so complacent and don't realize they can have huge influence on city council with some letters and phone calls.
The only people who get this are old angry white guys in Town cars.

I thought the council was still left-wing.
The types that raise taxes, mortgage your children's future, initiate fees and then go cruise the Caribbean to study how they're doing things there?
Isn't that why the Mayor is having a hard time getting stuff through?
At least he doesn't need ventilation in the back of his jackets.

Designated Free motorcycle parking spots don't work too well.
They had that before they opened up free motorcycle parking.
I never ever saw a motorcycle in any of the three spots I knew of.
It ended up just being an extra long spot for cars and trucks.

Guys, contact your ward's councillor. It's cool to ***** on the forum, but ***** to the person who can actually do something about it. The debate is Oct 8, plenty of time to try to do something about it.

Does anyone know of a councillor who rides, or who has been an advocate for motorcycles in the past? We could get in contact with them to make a point in the debate to get this **** to go away

Edit: It looks like the previous amendment was suggested by Case Ootes, former councillor of Ward 29. He was been succeeded by Mary Fragedakis. Please consider sending her an email about this subject, maybe she can spearhead this: http://www.toronto.ca/councillors/fragedakis1.htm

De Baeremaeker who is actually still a councillor was the second on the original motion, so consider contacting him as well: http://www.toronto.ca/councillors/debaeremaeker1.htm

According to the previous report, the City didn't believe there was any meaningful loss of income:

Our staff has spoken with colleagues at the Toronto Parking Authority and neither we nor TPA staff can accurately determine how much revenue is generated specifically from motorcycles parked in pay and display or metered parking areas. However, given the observed ratio of motorcycles to other motorized vehicles parked on City streets, it is unlikely that allowing motorcycles to park free of charge in areas controlled by parking machines or parking meters will produce a meaningful reduction in generated revenue.
