The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

So part of the reason I was selling those Seikos was making room for a couple new watches that are missing from the watch box: I don't own a chronograph, and I've been looking for an integrated bracelet watch that's thin, light, and comfortable to wear. For the former, I've all but settled on an echo/neutra 1956 Chrono, one I chickened out on buying at the watch show but still want.

For the latter, I hunted around for a while to settle on an integrated bracelet option. Looked at a bunch of options (Nivada Grenchen F77, Yema Urban Traveller, Tissot PRX, Alpina Alpiner Extreme, Certina DS-7, Frederique Constant High Life, Autodromo Group B, Maen Manhattan and others), but none was just right. I also came super close to buying a Christopher Ward Twelve 40mm, but was put off by its ubiquity in the watch world, and I find the design a bit busy.

I settled on a Venezianico Arsenale Avventurina (say that three times quickly):

Almost every watch on the above list is heavily influenced by one watch or another, if not a downright homage/copy, and in this case the 'influence' is a Parmigiani Tonda PF, which could be worse. It's the Avventurina version, which is a traditional type of Venetian Murano glass with metalflake mixed in. In this case the dial is made of the glass, and is quite sparkly with varying brightness depending how deep the pieces are in the glass.

Venezianico is a brand with a mixed history, especially early days with a disastrous Kickstarter and some patchy QC for a while. Considering this cost just over half of the Christopher Ward, the finishing and quality is bang on for that price. The bevel on the bracelet edge isn't as crisp as the Twelve, but the bracelet is more complex and fully articulated. The only sore spot for me is the half-link needed to get the sizing right on my wrist is finished slightly differently, so stads out a bit if you're looking closely. Otherwise it's great. The movement is a Miyota 9039, which I also have in my Baltic Aquascaphe, and it's excellent. Runs about +2 per day on the wrist, is durable as anything, and allows the watch to be under 10mm thick.

Its disheartening to think of all the vintage timepieces that are being scraped for precious metal value these days.
Thinking tho that might however bump the value of remaining pieces when collectors come to terms with the rarity of some models.
If you chose wisely there is some opportunity here.

When melt value is higher than full watch value, it's hard to do anything else. Hopefully it is mostly cases/bands getting smelted and the movements/dials/hands live to see another case.

Today a Mido beach sand wave dial diver followed me home . It wasn’t really on my radar but it ticked most of the boxes for me . And my wife really liked it . Good to six hundred feet depth lol
The wife stamp of approval sure helps with the spontaneous buys. Went to the Citizen store in the Milton outlets a while back to look at the Tsuyosa and Zenshin models, and my wife was determined that I go home with an Alpina that she loved. If it was one and a half mm thinner, I probably would have...

That Mido is a beaut. Reminds me a bit of the Christopher Ward Dune watches, but as a diver. Mido is doing some interesting stuff lately. It's tough being boxed into the Swatch hierarchy, but they're finding a bit of a niche.

The titanium Citizen I bought a while back has totally spoiled me. All my other watches feel like bricks on my wrist now as the titanium one is so light and comfortable.

Either that or I'm going to have to up my budget and only buy titanium watches from here on out.

I have a Tudor Pelagos titanium , blue face . I think it’s nice but yes it was a bit spendy’er than Citizen .

Anybody else been just shopping and notice Omega and Tudor , and I assume others all jumped ten to twelve percent in the last month? I thought I needed a Tudor black bay / white dial , red bezel . It’s gone to over six k at retail . My gold / silver black bay is ninety five hundred at retail “because gold “ I was told . Might be time to sell it .

Prices have gone crazy the last few years. Speedmasters have almost doubled in the last 10 years. All models have gone way up.
I remember buying a used 1 year old Seamaster Ceramic for $2500. Current model used now would be between $5000 to $6000.
