Yes it is, except that in North America being armed against your Government is a common reason given for gun ownership. I believe that's why it was mentioned again couple posts back.

Gun laws are irrelevant in Venezuela, this is not about people being able to carry guns or defend themselves against military shooting at them, people have to demonstrate en peace or the moment they start killing police or military the government will use that to justify even more rigid anti freedom laws.

The only way this government will leave is if the less than half of Venezuelans that supported chavez revolt against the new president and the military leaders finally realize they can not longer support the government, only then Venezuela can go back to voting for a legitimate government.

Correct, and if the footage of rioting in Ukraine is any indication, the government's goon squad will readily shoot at unarmed citizens.

I'm not advocating armed combat between citizens and police; I'm merely pointing to the fact that police can and will turn against the very people they're supposed to protect. And this point is in response to:

Well that paints a pretty grim picture. Every country on the planet has a Government. Every Government could potentially run roughshod over the populace. Every citizen of every country should own a gun to balance out the power. Is citizen gun ownership what is keeping things in check in stable counties right now? Seriously, maybe I should get my head out of the sand.
 
I certainly feel that every citizen of every country should have the RIGHT to own a gun... whether they buy one (or 15) is up to them.

Are guns in the hands of citizens keeping things stable? Of course not. Good economies and low unemployment are what keeps things stable. When hard times come, order tends to fall apart quickly. To believe that we in the western world are immune to whats happening in Ukraine right now is terribly naive. We're only human, too.

My point again is that its horribly unfair and downright rotten for governments to disarm their citizens, only to turn around and use the police and military forces against those same people when times get tough.
 
Not to worry the USA has troops...oops I mean peacekeepers next door. They will arrive shortly.

Some say the Government has a few days left in power. The Military are finally starting to wake up and there was a letter written by some high end military officials to the government letting them know that their days are counted. One general (retired) posted a youtube video calling the government traitors for selling themselves to Cuba, National Guard was sent to arrest him and he with the help of the people fought the national Guard and they weren't able to arrest him (this is a guy with lots of cojones)

Absolutely sickening to watch. Like a bunch of marauding murderers those troops or whatever they are. How low can a human being be to kill innocent people for a living. Whats this world coming to?

No its definitely not a new thing but if you are paid a menial salary are you gonna kill innocent people to hold your petty job. Now murder for hire in the millions many would step up

Dude, its been proven numerous times throughout history that yes, menially paid trigger pullers can, do and have killed innocent people. Whether its the fear of having the same done to them, indoctrination or whatever, its been done.

Look at G20. Nobody got killed, but had it gotten out of hand a bit more, i absolutely can see our police opening fire...
