The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

So much wtf. VW driver needs to go back to G1. Lots of dumb capped off by a full stop in the centre lane for no reason at all. That was far more dangerous than the actual wreck they just caused. It's hard to tell if car ahead of vw hit the brakes and vw following too closely caused it or if it was 100% vw fault.

Looks like the results of a brake check, to me. VW was right up the other car's ass and a tap of the brakes made him panic.

Yah. I hesitated to call it a brake check as the front vehicle didn't appear to dive. It may have been a light touch to turn on the brake lights and get vw to back off. In my mind, that doesn't count as a brake check but I don't know if the law feels differently. By continuing to drive after the brake lights triggered a crash, they are setting themselves up for fail to remain even though they did not make contact. If they stayed and talked to cop (and didnt say something incredibly stupid), good chance there is no charge.

If the vehicle didn't actually slow down, but rather the brake lights just flashed on, then it doesn't meet the requirements of a brake check under 455/07 (regulations regarding Stunt Driving).

EDIT - I just glanced at the regulations, again, and they can be interpreted to mean that every one of those idiots who makes a left turn, after their advanced green has ended, could be charged for stunt driving. At least it's open to interpretation.

If you are facing oncoming traffic and boot it to grab the green, you are out accelerating the oncoming vehicle. It doesn't have to be a side by side drag race. Ticket, tow and taxi.

I'm starting to fear driving in the city due to liability issues.

A neighbour related having his car hit by a cyclist racing along a sidewalk head down and wearing a noise deadening headset. The kid was facing a red light and was blocked from view by a hedge.

Is there a stupid competition going on?

With the city core being bicycle righteous any collision could be a financial nightmare for the driver.

That's one of the reasons I refuse to drive into the City anymore. Other reasons are; the high concentration of clueless and distracted drivers, streets that are increasingly anti-car, construction closures, and political interference that actually makes driving worse. I don't care what's going on down there, it's just not worth it to me. It's no better to take transit because most of these problems make that an even slower way to travel.

This is why I have been running front and rear cameras for years. Seriously considering an upgrade to a 4 channel setup, now that some idiot keyed my car, for kicks.

It's not just Toronto. Barrie is horrible. I assume anywhere in Ontario is horrible. Speed cameras are multiplying rapidly. Driver ability is plummeting. Province is making close to no effort to improve the situation. There are lots of fast and easy changes province could make to improve the system (must do road tests close to registered address, reset more bad drivers back to G1, etc).

Part of the issue, on not resetting people to G1 or requiring a test, is how long it takes for cases to be heard in court. Even back in '98 things were bad. I have mentioned before that I got taken out on my bike, head on, but an uninsured and unlicensed pizza delivery driver (his license was suspended due to previous tickets). By the time it got to court his license was already reinstated, as some of the points on his license had timed out. They even dropped the charges down in order to have him agree to a guilty plea, when this guy had no business on the road at all. When they asked if I was OK with that I pretty much asked them if they were kidding and said I knew they'd do whatever they wanted to, anyway. They did.

The timeline isn't a huge obstacle. The punishment should be after conviction. Sure, points dropped off, but he was convicted for driving while suspended. That should make him permanently ineligible for a license. Feel free to move to a different country if he wants to drive. Zero sympathy. Face tattoos after conviction are high on my list of good ideas. "I drive suspended" across your forehead should give pause to anyone selling or loaning you a vehicle as they know you will likely dump liability on them.

The driving while suspended charge was one of the charges they dropped.* They also hit him with a fine for driving while uninsured that was below the minimum, then gave him something like 6 months to pay. If I remember correctly the fine was $1500 when the statutory minimum is $5K.

*I think they replaced it with "turn not in safety."
