Tampered Ignition - Attempt to Steal

Hi folks,

Don't usually post much here but over the weekend someone attempted to steal my SV650 from my condo garage by trying to unlock the ignition lock.

Any one have had this situation happen to them before?

This is cause for some stress since I have been planning to sell the motorcycle. It is now in perpetual lock position so I cannot move it and it would be hard to get a tow truck down there because the garage in my condo has a low ceiling.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thanks

you may need to get a wheel dolly from Priincess auto or somewhere, or do like the condo theives and get a couple buddies to lift the bike to a waiting vehicle to take it to the shop.

anyway sorry to hear your misfortune... good luck getting it sorted out

Thanks Suzuki. I'll take a look at that wheel dolly you mention. A dolly though sounds like it could damage the bike.

I think s/he is asking how to make it secure.

#1. Remove from condo parking lot.

Not like SV650s don't get stolen but are you sure maybe it wasn't just kids or such messing with bike?

It could be just kids messing with the bike. All I can surmise is that the ignition has been tampered. I believe someone was trying to unlock the bike so they can wheel it off somewhere. There are scratches and metal shavings around the ignition area. It looks like a screw driver or other object was used to tamper with the ignition.

I cannot start the bike nor unlock it from the lock position. It is pretty much stuck there until I can load it on a vehicle and take it to a shop to get the ignition fixed.

I misunderstood

CAA plus will flatbed it, dunno how they will get it up on truck. Then new ignition from dealership?

Son got a note from another rider in his building in Mississauga saying the same thing.
Tampered ignition.

Call you insurance and report it. They should pay for new locks and have it moved.

MotoLimo has at least one truck that can fit (standard size pickup) they might be your best bet.

I didn't renew my insurance because I was going to sell the bike and have had no time to ride all year. Although I was told that home owner's insurance might cover it.

Typically homeowners insurance won't cover anything to do with motor vehicles (it would cover contents if the vehicle were stolen). Get your bike out of that garage ASAP if you don't have insurance on it. Rent a storage locker, or a buddies garage, or anywhere that's not where it is now. They may be back and should be better prepared, losing and uninsured bike sucks.

You should be able to put just theft on it no? With the amount of bikes stolen from condos and other places in the GTA, its worth the minimal cost of insurance to keep the basics on it. Better that then being out a bike with no insurance.

Agree! I think I will put theft insurance on the bike.

Agree!

They don't let you put theft only on a motorcycle. You'd have to put comprehensive on it.

Most insurance companies don't like writing theft only policies anymore. The paperwork required for the minimal money isn't worth it (and people would ride them anyway, crash and expect liability coverage). If you can get it, it's a good idea, but I expect the locked storage unit will be the way forward.
