Stocks

I caught a dip in the S&P last week and just added more to an ETF (TPU).

Mimico…not sure what you have decided to do but my strategy is a few big names (Costco etc) and mostly S&P ETFs. I transfer a set amount every month into my TFSA and RRSP accounts and let it ride for a bit as cash and when things look unsettled I’ll put an offer in at a lower price on ETFs and let that offer ride for a week. Sometimes they get filled, sometimes they don’t. Rinse and repeat. I don’t have to manage things much at all and my S&P is up 30ish % over when I started doing this (admittedly only a few years). I have any dividends ploughed back in to stock buys.

I figure picking something obscure is really more gambling than anything else and I don’t want any part in that. Trying to spot trends is more of a guess for someone like me and I recognize that and don’t partake.

I am also a financial dumbass and have no idea what futures are etc. However, the advice I got was from a wealth advisor via a colleague in terms of reasonably safe investing.
my stragety has been to mainly put in $200-300/biweekly (just started recently) and dumping most of it into VGRO and some Enbridge / VET.TO / XQQ.TO...

Out of a mid-400k portfolio...VGRO is +92k, XQQ.TO is +13k, and I have a few small losers in there also.

Overall...a very conservative portfolio, but not the worst.

Once this 130k makes it's way to my QT account, I'll dump most of it into XQQ/VGRO, and some into smaller stocks that pay dividends which I can DRIP.

do you mind sharing?
Stantec. Only a 1% buy. Stock price has been beaten up lately. Dividend yield sucks but payout ratio is really low so it could be drastically increased if they wanted to. I suspect it will stay low and they will keep using money for acquisitions.

Be careful with large cash infusions in the Q's. I still expect some of this AI froth to pop and all of the Q funds will have a brutal period after. I pulled a bunch of the kids RESP out of XQQ so they weren't so exposed if that happened.

I've been watching this young American youtuber who's been living in Thailand the last 2 years who has other friends and shady foreigner characters he meets around town while partying daily or other activities he does on his channel sometimes, selling the dream. He has had more than a couple so called "trading experts" featured in some videos, one I recall had him over for a teaching session and showed all the graphs on his monitors and whatnot, showing him what to do. A video or two later he claimed he had been trading "and it's like uh %90 profitable man" :ROFLMAO:  what does that even mean :ROFLMAO: Of course trying to funnel people into their trading platform. I saw a commenter question him and ask him if he could even explain some basic stuff in this trading platform and he deleted the comment. That was a few months ago now and never brings it up. I think too many people called him out on the BS. When he first started posting videos he told girls he did crypto, and that he was a "youtuber" back when he had less than 2000 subscribers. Really wondering how he's lasting so long out there with not much legit income (at least that he lets on. His channel got deleted when he grew it to 20k subscriber and now started again). Has prob blown through at least 80 grand or more by now by how he spends and only in late 20's. Maybe got a settlement or something he is working his way through.

Another guy on Instagram I see has been there the last 2 months. A "trading" expert showing all the graphs on his screenshots looking like he's making big $$ and wearing all the jewelry and going out blowing cash every night as you'd expect. Selling his ultra limited 10 person coaching courses, lucky for you 3 people just dropped out so you can get in on it too!! Today he posted a story saying he is releasing a new platform where he took in 450k GBP private investment and has made %100 profit since January. He's now opening it up to others that want to invest in the same fund. Acting like a real bigshot business guy. One of those guys where if you scroll back a couple years on his profile you will see him standing in front of the fancy cars with fake designer clothing on, back in Britain. If you can double your money in 6 months why are you wasting your time selling courses or coaching teams of people?? Why don't you own a home or have anything other than a few designer shirts to show for your life? Hmm people must really eat this stuff up wanting to get in on it but to me it just screams scammer.

Some of the dodgier trading and/or betting platforms provide fake websites for their influencers to use. The fake sites make every trade a winner. When fact checked with the dates/times and real prices, they are almost universally losers.

And with today’s bewildering new global tariffs on eighty countries for forced labour ? Swiss cheese and Australian wine? Is MacDoc being forced to pick grapes ? Japanese market down, China down, most of the EU markets down. Is anything safe ? I dropped ten K over night on a “balanced” portfolio.

What about now? I was down about 1% yesterday and up about 0.5% today. Daily swings are interesting but almost meaningless if you are staying in. A bad day or two is normally followed by a good day or two (and vice versa). The long term trend is the important bit.

EDIT:
And now things have continued to climb and I am up more today than I was down yesterday. All meaningless sideways motion. Less than 1% from my all-time high.

It's interesting to see the swings as he gains and loses more than any other person in history but it also demonstrates how meaningless the numbers can be. Especially in his case. If he started selling shares to diversify or protect his net worth, the bottom would fall out of the market. Even if he was worth 1T on paper, I think he'd have trouble unwinding things and ending with more that 25% of that in cash. It's Schrodingers cat. If you can't sell the thing you own that is "worth" so much, what is the true value?
