lol some of us like skin, others like to take the risk. You can get mesh, textile, or perforated leather jackets as well to stay cool. The only time you get hot is if you are stuck in traffic. Not trying to sound like a gear nazi or anything, but just keep in mind that if you fall with only a ******-vest on, you will be sliding across hot pavement on bare skin until you reach bone. But that could also be said about some mesh and textile jackets as well... I wear a textile jacket and try my best to keep moving.

Whatever you choose to wear, ride safe and good luck with getting your bike!

Gear is rarely comfortable or practical. Get used to sweating and stay hydrated. It's there to give you some protection in the event of an accident. Finding something that works in all conditions is difficult, since weather conditions change constantly. Layers and heated gear for colder riding, rainsuits for downpours, mesh textiles and lighter gloves for summer conditions. I don't wear leather since I'm too lazy to care for it properly.

It's less of an issue if your bike has luggage capacity. I simply carry the extra stuff I need (especially during early spring/late fall), but most bikes are very limited in this regard.

Well I do tend to like my skin - so therefore I try to wear my leather to minimize losing it.

Ask yourself this:
do you plan to ride a lot, constantly try to learn and experiment with techniques?
or
do you plan to wash your bike a lot, keep it shiny, go to bike meets, and not ride too much?

People who are #1, tend to dress for the crash unless it's way to hot. Learning and experimenting sometimes result in failure lol #2 seems to prefer just a vest and t-shirt. Mind you I have nothing against #2: to each their own.

After your first crash or "Insident" you understand on which side of the gear line you rather be... I wear the same vest you saw under a leather jacket n it makes a nice gap for air, as days get hot you learn to deal with it ...

Like many said to each their own when it comes to gear :) and when you start riding you will probably find your direction and mentality towards gear on vs gear off ...

I wear 3 sets of gear:

1. 2-piece perforated leather suit, that is to say jacket and pants that zip into each other. I rarely bother putting it on for rides around town, but wear it religiously for spirited rides, touring or extended highway trips (If I'm going past Whitby, it goes on) and gauntlet gloves (also ventilated).
2. Hi-vis yellow "douch-vest", elbow pads, gloves, riding jeans. Wear this for short trips, going to meets, the mall, the gf's house, and at night. (The Hi-vis REALLY does help on an all black bike).
3. Mesh pants and jacket with optional wind/waterproof liners. Also use it for touring but if I'm taking a nice easy ride.

Always wear my Alpinestars SM-X Plus boots and UnderArmour Heatgear though. Comfy as anything and if you wear good socks sweat isnt a factor.

Mind you I know the risks and rewards and pros and cons involved as far as all my gear goes. If I didn't get heat stroke way too easy I'd wear the suit all the time. I'd never go squid, but ATGATT is a bit extreme

It's NEVER too hot for proper gear. The hottest we get is like 40 a couple days per summer. Just drink lots of water and you will be fine.

psshhh.. road rash.. it'll buff right out!

If I know I'm riding hard, I gear up. Leather jacket, jeans, boots, gauntlet gloves. Trust me, it saved me before

Jeans will usually shred at anything over about 40 kph. If they didn't in the past, I'd consider myself lucky.

Royal Flush, you need to do a lot more gear research.

I also have three different gear setups:
1. 2 piece perforated kangaroo leather in a light colour, with gauntlets. This is for anything that involves leaving town when the weather is above 10*C. I can't say this is as cool (temperature wise) as riding squid, since I've never ridden squid at highway speeds, but given the light colour and perforations I don't get as much heat from the sun and get a constant breeze when moving.
2. Kevlar cargo pants and mesh/textile jacket for in town, with shorty gloves.
3. Unperforated leather, gauntlets, and insulated pants for out of town when the temps drop. I ride into the negatives and this works well enough.
Boots are always on, no question.

I am ATGATT. I don't ride to the mall or anywhere I need to walk around in my gear, unless absolutely necessary (I will take my car). If I did though I would at minimum wear the leather jacket/Back protector/gloves, and possibly boots.

Otherwise I wear gear all the time. I just bought a nexo leather jacket and it is a good medium (temperature wise). My mesh without the liner keeps me the coolest, then the leather jacket with/without liner, and the mesh with liner is the warmest (plus a hoodie for Oct-Nov).

It's not very often I am TOO hot in my full gear unless you're in a lot of stop and go traffic.

A gear thread! How quaint.

You're an adult, wear what you want. Do the research as to why you wear gear in the first place and decide for yourself.
