So how much money have you spent on riding track days?

TAFB I heard broke a few things other than his bike. For a low side it tore him and his bike up bad for a 90km/hr slide

I just started this year ... WOW tons of money. Dedicated track bike $4800, tires $350, track suit $1300, boots (can't remember), Fast School plus 11 track days booked, don't even want to add that up!!! Hotel stays, food, gas blah blah blah and whatever else comes up ... and it always does. Oh well, I'm older, have some money and the house is paid for ... what the hell, it's soooooooo much fun. I don't think anyone spends more then bakaboy. His whole family is on the track it would seem ... every weekend!!!!

I got my SOAR licence in 2009......went to lots of races to spectate and keep score for endurance, but didn't start racing myself until Aug 2010. I think I have raced in 17 race weekends so far .

1st racebike built from insurance wreck- $4600
2nd racebike bought ready to race- $3000
3rd racebike built from nice streetbike-$8000
SOAR licences x 3 yrs- $450
entry fees for 3 classes x 1 weekends so far - $5400
2 sets of leathers - $1400
2 helmets - $600
5 sets of gloves - $1000
1 pair of boots $400
2 underarmour suits -$250
2 back protectors -$300
1 Hyudai generator (lasted 1 season) $600
1 used Cloeman generator (lasted 1 hour) $125
Yamaha generator $1200
2 pop up canopies - $250
camper - $4000
tires (just guessing) - $3500
bike and generator fuel (just guessing) $2700
van fuel - $2000
camping stuff (chairs, bq, electric heater etc. guessing) $1000

---------------------------------------------------

...running tally $40,775 so far....ish.

.......I am sure I am forgetting tons of stuff, but roughly shows the huge costs involved. And I consider myself a frugal racer, who tries to get at least two race weekends out of a set of tires on my sprint bike, etc. I run pump gas only. Nothing fancy. No fancy Arai helmets etc.... Both sets of leathers bought on clearance. Canopies on sale at Canadian Tire for $100.....that kind of thing. I Use my work van as bike hauler an tow my used camper with it. Even groceries for a weekend at the track can be over $100, and beer/wine/liquor is also a discretionary cost that adds up. Add in GoPro cameras etc....
Can you do it cheaper? SUre. Tow 1 bike with a Civic. Race 1 class. Sleep in a tent. Eat bowls of ceral and peanut butter and jam sandwiches. Race on scrub tires. I guess I am somewhere in the middle.

No, we need another cover thread were we put in how cheap it is to race/track and how most items are given to us or sold really cheap.

A guy I race with asked me if I ever tried calculating cost per lap. I said no....

.he replied "DON'T!!"

You forgot bike maintenance! LOL
I sleep in a tent...tow with my civic and race one class ! its not too bad for me.

Oh I didn't forget...it just hurt me to type any more numbers...left out maintainance, PAINT JOBS, LMAO...etc

There are guys who spend $1200-$1500 per weekend putting new tires on every race.....There's always gonna be someone who can do it cheaper than you, and someone who spends way more than you.
Truly, if you can do it, and are having fun at it, then you are successful, regardless of how little or how much you spent.

I'm with you ... I didn't even consider the canopies, trailer, generator blah blah blah. I'm having too much fun to even consider the money. It just means I can't do other stuff so I can support this new habit !!!!!!

This is a scary thread. Raced for 27yrs and then started SOAR. During racing years had probably near twenty racebikes and traveled all over North America. With SOAR lost almost six figures in first three years. :( Would do it all again :) Hell still own four racebikes .....sigh it never stops.

I have had the same race bike for 16 years, and I camp in a tent. I don't add up what it costs. All I know is that whatever I haven't spent on racing, I wasted.

Someone in my career position ought to have a 5000 sq ft house with a Mercedes out front. Don't have that, don't care.

It took some balls to start a racing series, nevermind running races. Those losses incurred would have kept me up nights.

When you see some of the drag car guys setups at Grand Bend and Cayuga you realize our hobby is pretty cheap.

These guys have hundreds of thousand dollars invested.

I try to keep my costs down by using my debit card, as opposed to making someone at Mastercard/Visa rich.

Still i would give up a kidney to pay for day at Mosport or Bogie.:p

So would I. Give up one of your kidneys, that is.

We all thank you for giving us the playground. No better place I'd rather spend my weekend
