Skilled trades college

School is mostly a scam these days, unless theres a direct relationship between your degree and employment (nursing, med school, civil engineer etc) Even then its rough

Get some experience somehow (helper or whatever) use your connections (family, friends, etc) and bingo you're set. Union or not.

If you dont know nobody, dont expect to get anywhere.

One of my friends found the golden ticket in civil engineering. Out of college moved to Fort Mac for a few years working with a construction company (all expenses paid) had other companies trying to recruit him out there. Saved bank. His parents worked at Hamilton city hall their whole life in civil department so has connections back here. Came back and had a list of companies that he got to choose what one to work for...the last 10 years or so has been working at a smaller construction company where the owners pretty much let him run most of it while they play with their Ferraris and other expensive toys. Pretty sure he's well over 250k a year now. Said the owners don't pay attention to what he pays himself as long as they're making money (about 30 mil a year company right now). He got his mom in there too after she retired from the city with a juicy pension (I guess she enjoys paying taxes)

They just purchased an established underground pipe company that does re-lining of old pipes and other things. (my guess around 10 million) that they used to contract to their jobs. The owners gave him a %25 ownership of this new company because it was his idea and he has plans to expand/re-invent it. He's never had to pay a cellphone bill/truck payment/insurance/fuel etc in the last 15 years. Puts in a lot of hours but yea I'd say that's pretty good out of a college course.

My 79 year old neighbor says just that. He was in construction, primarily a carpenter, but did other jobs too spanning 40 years. He was in the GTA and Boston for about 20 years. He said if you have an in and work to prove yourself, you`ll do very well.

I’d argue against that to some degree ( see what I did there ) , yes there is a correlation between a nursing degree and being a nurse , however a bachelors degree teaches critical thinking and how to learn and is often a benchmark in a hiring process . It shows an employer at least you can put your mind to a task for three / four years .
I will agree if you took art history and specialize in the romantic era you may be nearly unemployable in that field . MANY degrees are a complete waste of study time , and so are tuition mills teaching secretarial skills to newcomers. If you don’t know how to get out of your own way , or network , things may never go well for you . An education is not a heavy thing to carry around , the weight of stupidity is endless .

Connections are a huge part of any success story that anyone that’s ’self made’ is primarily lying.

Getting an apprenticeship…need connections as applicants are a dime a dozen and then having the hours signed off is another issue.

I’ve never worked in my field of study (aero) but the connections I’ve made along the last 20 years in my industry basically helped me not look for a job, but get asked if I want to join instead.

Which is why I’m starting my search now as my job is coming to a close, and whether I stay in this OPS branch or not…that depends where the next offer comes from (internal or external).

Of course all the connections in the world won’t help if one is an idiot or a hard person to work with.

And remember to look out for Number 1. Work hard, show your worth and then don't be afraid to ask for a raise or revise your resume. I got ahead because I stuck up for myself. In interviews I would never answer the question of what my current employer was paying " Oh I'm well compensated for the work I do"
So many get a job settle in and expect their employer to look after them. Don't fall for it.

I think times have changed. I’ve worked for big and small companies, and myself for quite a while. I’ve done different things, years in product development (lan products) a decade in public network infrastructure, then in textiles, then banking, then light industrial manufacturing. Now I manage difficult construction projects for stupid money (my part time retirement gig - I work a week a month in brutally tough conditions, I make more in 5 days than bank volume makes in a month.

My career basically had 5 wholesale changes where I had little to leverage but business acumen and a track record at each change.

I moved fast in every company by doing a few simple things. Acting like an owner - I learned everything I could and made decisions and action thinking like an owner. Do the dirty work that everybody avoids - it turns you into the go-to guy that everyone notices and respects. Never **** the dog. That single thing is what separates performers and career risers more than skill and knowledge.

There’s money in every business and trade. You just have to do what it takes to earn it. If you’re on autopilot, the boss flies your plane. If you grab the controls, you get to soar.

After decades of being in the workforce (I am retired), I'd sooner have someone that knows what the heck they are doing than have them tell me they have a degree or a certificate.

Other than a doctor or a dentist, I have never hired anyone. Its done right and its done right the first time.
