short VIN, lost permit

I remember reading a thread about short VIN's a while back, but I cannot find it now. I bought a '80 Yamaha in boxes, but no ownership, it has a short VIN (6 digits). In the past I have been able to get UVIF's for these short VIN's today the otherwise pleasant clerk said the vin could not be found. I suspect that she was not looking in the right place, as i have no reason to believe it was never registered in Ontario. I also think it's the luck of the draw in these offices as to what results one has when you get outside the usual.
Does any one have any suggestions so I can get the UVIF to start the process of getting a replacement ownership?

I thought the current VIN structure began with model year 1980? Maybe that was only for cars though, but I doubt it since the VIN structure is the same for cars and bikes.

Maybe you have a '78 or '79?

I am a little confused. If you have the v.i.n. you should still be able to get an ownership in the same way.

The op said the bike was an '80, the VIN on the xs650 web site seems to support that.
Low rider, my problem is the Ministry says the vin "is not found" therefore i cannot get a UVIF and do the stat dec for lost permit after giving notice to the listed last registered owner. I think I will just go to a different clerk another day and she/he will phone another resource at head office and find the vin.

You can give the mto an notary letter and they should be able to register to you.

problem has been resolved, thanks for your inputs
Actually, I spoke too soon, before I returned to Service Ontario with better info, the vin is still not found, there is no record of it ever being registered in Ontario, must have come in from out of province, checked CPIC and at least the vin did not show up there. It's an 80 XS I got for parts for a build, just thought I would upgrade the leftovers with an ownership and recoup some $.

Ok, I am assuming that frame and engine do not match.
Are you trying to get the vin using the frame number?
Is so, try using the engine vin.

Go to dotheton and do a search on how to do this. Basically you need a notarized affidavit, and a receipt and a letter from the dealer verifying the vin to the year etc. (optional, but do it unless you want a model year of 2012/2013 on the ownership)

I just did three of my early 70's CB750 frames that were never registered.

Be prepared to spend some time "assisting" the girls at the MTO with the process..iirc it took about 2 hours to get it all done and walk out with VIN's in hand.

Yes, go to a forum where members with old bikes have actually done this, not GTAM where everyone is convinced it can't be done.
