Scooters on sidewalk = $60 ticket!!!

Scoots

New member
Hi all,

I parked my 49cc scooter on a Toronto sidewalk and found the dreaded $60 ticket attached to the seat two days ago. Moral of the story: don't park on sidewalks!! The infraction was "parked on sidewalk".

Having done a lot of research afterwards, I found that there is a lot of misinformation out there.

I parked my scooter at a green-p on-street parking area today, and found a yellow sticky from a rider, very kindly asking me to park on a sidewalk because it's allowed, and to leave space instead for motorbikes. Moral of the story: scooters can't park on sidewalks and unfortunately, we are going to have to share until our mayor and councillors change the rules, if they ever do.

I hope this helps inform other scooter riders before they pay get hit with $60 fine and bikers to be more understanding of why a scooter is parked on-street!

Thanks

While I am a rider of the larger two-wheel discplacement variety, I would never recommend that a scooter rider move his beast to the sidewalk.

There is also a thread in the stickies up top about general motorcycle parking. I'm sure it's been said before, but it's a big cash grab. There's nowhere on our bikes to put a parking pass if we do pay for parking. So we can either skip a day of work to get a ticket thrown out, or pay the fine.

OP, out of curiosity... how was the ticket attached to your bike?

When I see bikes get parking tickets, they're usually stuffed in the seat.

Jeeze a rider actually left you a note like that?

I got a ticket once for parking on the street without a permit in Ottawa. I didn't find it until I removed my windscreen one day and saw it wedged way down inside the nose fairing.

Just put yourself in his shoes. Since 2005 motorcycles park for free in Toronto, on designated spaces (pay-and-display), and scooters park on the sidewalk (tolerated). This week, all the scooters get tickets and have to get OFF THE SIDEWALK, to pay-and-display spaces on the road, competing for space with the motorcycles.

The motorcycle rider who left the sticky for you was like "What the ******? You took my spot, scooters belong on the sidewalk, GTFO".

Crowded? Hell yeah. But better get used to it.

You figure the city would at least make up their mind, either let them park on the side walk or don't - I think they figured it's time to get in some cash flow and all the scooters on the sidewalk lets give them a ticket.

OP were you parked on the sidewalk in a way that you were impeding pedestrians? I see a lot of scooters parked however they please because they're scooters and blah blah blah

i guess now we gotta share the street. Now if only they crack down on the ebikes...

49cc that's harsh. I could understand if it's a big scooter but man giving a ticket to a 49cc that's low.

Ford isn't getting his casino, he needs to raise the 100 million somehow...

Man that's bad news. I also ride a 49cc scooter in Toronto and love it for the ease of free parking anywhere. I've always made sure not to block any part of "walkable" side walk.

I admit I haven't been riding in the downtown core this month, recently graduated and looking for work :-)

he can sell crack......

That would mean that chubby bastard would have to stop doing crack. Good luck.

Couldn't agree more. 5 in the last two days just bombing down the road and hitting the sidewalk to avoid traffic or a light. It's total bs.

If interested in the fight to keep scooters on sidewalks:

1- Here's a petition: http://www.change.org/en-CA/petitio...ing-scooters-for-parking-on-toronto-sidewalks
2- Here's the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/SaveOurScootersToronto?fref=ts
3- And here is the update from Councillor Matlow's office

They are currently seeking a councillor to bring Councillor Matlow's letter to this month's Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. This is the committee to which this matter should be addressed. They hope to confirm shortly that it will be on the committee agenda for Thursday, June 20. If it is supported there it will then be considered by City Council at its meeting on July 16-17. I will update you once this is confirmed.

I inquired as to whether they could inform parking services to delay enforcement of the bylaw pending this reconsideration. I am advised that the best person to contact about the staff decision to begin an enforcement campaign is Constable Hugh Smith of Traffic Services.

If an SOS Toronto follower has free time during the day and can place a call with this request, it would be appreciated. The reason for the sudden decision to enforce this bylaw and the number of actual complaints received about scooter parking on sidewalks would be useful to know.

As I receive updates, I will pass them on.
