A convenience store robbery in Richmond Hill led York Region police on a wild chase up into Aurora on Wednesday morning, eventually shutting down a portion of Yonge Street.
Yonge was closed in both directions near Industrial Parkway as police searched for the suspect. A 28-year-old man was arrested just before 6:30 a.m.
Officers allege the man broke in to a variety store at Yonge and Silverwood Avenue, north of Elgin Mills, around 4:30 a.m.
When the store’s emergency alarms went off, the suspect took off on a motorcycle. As police pursued him, the suspect ditched the bike and carjacked a second vehicle. After a short struggle with the driver, the suspect then continued north on Yonge.
At one point, the chase reached speeds of 140 kilometres an hour.
However, the suspect struck his own motorcycle in his attempt to escape, dragging the bike on Yonge. The motorcycle caught fire near Industrial Parkway and the man fled on foot.
The canine unit as well as a police helicopter was brought in for the search and the man was arrested.
He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
There’s no word yet on charges.
