Restaurants

Actually, that’s the one! Should have said Husky and not Esso. Dang it! Going to correct my post.

I suspect if you been there the last 15 years or so, there still would be some familiar faces with signs of wear. lol.

Not since I left the Falls (Stamford Center) - late 80s. That was the best /closest hangover breakie. Mountain>Mewburn>left on York and pull into the lot.

Nothing will ever beat breakfast at the Lincoln Lodge (RIP) in Baysville. Ever.

The Husky a klick or so east of there on York use to serve a good breakfast (Texas Toast!) for a good price. Don't know about now.
Been years but many a LATE night or early breakfast at Huskys.
Being open 24 hours it was the only game in town when coming home from the Falls or being over the River.
Only problem was it was also a hangout for the OPP on shift.

True dat! Seems to be an unofficial OPP outpost.

These days I will only do Keg prime rib at one of the downtown locations (York St., Mansion) I am sure there are other locations that are good but in general all the other locations I have gone to lately it was super dried out, Sherway was the worst. Other steaks are generally OK at most locations as long as they cook them right. Like a number of places these days, they have a discount drink menu later at night in the bar...

Anyone looking for Italian in Etobicoke.... Mamma Matrino's is one of my go to places and the prices are good, but it is also the go to for many so there can be a huge line on some nights (Fri and Sat). Mamma Martino's Restaurant
One problem with a poorly prepared meal is it ruins the evening if it needs to be corrected so too often one makes do if it isn't toxic. Reordering means someone is out of the dining pattern.

We were the guests so it was even more difficult.

I'm not naming the place as it was a while back and they may have just been having a bad day. One bad day shouldn't be a death sentence.

It's quiet, cloth napkin place where one would be able to enjoy conversation. That part was fine.

I ordered the prime rib as I had enjoyed it several times before. Someone else ordered the salmon.

I ended up with a dried, over cooked hunk of beef and I could tell from looking at the other person's salmon wasn't any better, dry as dust.

We were having a good time socially so didn't make a fuss. I can only assume the chef called in sick and the bus boy took over. I should have called the next day and asked what they were thinking.

I haven't been back since and miss the earlier version of their fare. Should I give them another chance?

Fool me once...

If you enjoyed it before it's probably worth another shot. Maybe speak to a manager this time, just to ask what the deal was the last visit.

If you want to see insane prices go to Ruth's Chris Steak House.

About 10 years ago spouse and I went to the one that was at Square One, since closed I think, and had their renowned pound of melted butter, with a side of beef tenderloin, fully loaded baked potato and mixed veggies.

Heavy heavy meal and we suffered for hours post meal due to the massive fat hit from an excessive amount of butter used in everything they cooked.

I bought a whole tenderloin from Costco and stripped it. It saves about 20% per steak. I'm OK with freezing red meats but can't see buying frozen salmon unless it's going to be in a sauce and mediocre at that.

Tenderloin is tender but misses the flavor of a ribeye.

A new indie opened up nearby and had a better than usual menu for a pub / diner.
~$40 plus T&T for a wrap and chicken club.

The bottomless coffee was $2.99 but not knowing the restaurant business it's hard for me to judge how they make the numbers work. I don't think they'd survive on entree pricing alone. Apps, desserts and drinks are needed.

FB is feeding me, IMO, rage bait of what appears to be US tipping, service, and staff medical benefit surcharges plus suggestion of massive tip rates.

Canada has a better wage structure in most places. The old 15% is IMO still valid as the food prices are significantly higher and 15% of a significantly higher number is a bigger raise than most people got over the years.

Chains may get hit harder than indies as investors want the bigger pieces of the pie.

Expectations are going to take a bashing from inflation, housing, deficits, tariffs, interest rates etc.

Lately I’ve been eating in Stoufville - no fine dining but the pubs and roadhouse type restaurants are way more economical than Markham.

Wife and I are about $120 for most of the places in Markham Village, we’ve been paying about half by driving 10 minutes to Stouffville.

On wed? Captain Hooks had $5 pints, 9oz house red $5, $9/lb wings, $25 10Oz NY strip dinner.

Apparently the arrival of Chuck’s has caused the local restaurants to have a food fight.

Chucks is like Walmart opening in an area , many local smaller operations will struggle . The chain has massive buying power and supply lines that are hard to compete with .
On the other end , we have a Michelin restaurant in the area now . Even for a special event I couldn’t justify going , yet it appears busy .

I used to agree with this and maybe it was because I ate at a restaurant (Pearl Morrisette) before and after it had a star but it can be worth it.

The issue I have with most "nice" restaurants is that I usually still leave hungry.
