Radar detectors

Does anyone know if these things work? I see the passports and escorts advertised (not that kind) in car mags all the time. The mags are from the US so I'm wondering if the tech is even the same here. I understand they aren't foolproof but I'll take anything I can get with our strict laws.

They work but I have lost a couple to detector detectors in the past. You need a detector and a laser jammer or forget it and even then if they use instant on you are screwed especially if you jam on the brakes then they know you have a detector. Sometimes cops just flip it on to see who jumps on the brakes and then they just pull that guy over

I got popped with one in the early '90's . Cop had a radar detector detector, unfreakin believable. $130 fine and unit was confiscated. I had it nicely set up to go from car to bike. If your gonna get one you may as well get a good one. I think the one I had would go off from automatic opening doors and it did not give me much time to react ie. the cop would be real close. Remember too that the radar gun is not on constantly and a detector may not detect until it is too late.

Not legal in Ontario or Quebec.

Not all speed is measured by radar. Radar detectors won't detect laser. There are other technologies that claim to jam laser, but none of any of this will defeat an officer pacing you, or doing time/distance measurement by aircraft.

Many major highways have camera surveillance - although mostly only near major population centers.

Behave, and choose your times and places carefully for not behaving.

The only time I was caught last year was coming over a bridge. He heard me coming and was ready with the gun as soon as I came into sight. I wonder if one would have helped if they aren't always on?

For the record I slowed down because I don't trust coming into an area I can't see, even from a safety perspective, u never know what's over the bridge/around the corner

That's because either (1) you have a combined radar and laser detector, or (2) the cop is running radar ...

Well my detector specifically says LiDAR when it catches laser, K or Ka or PoP for regular radar, and even better than having a radar detector is a radar detector detector! I know whenever it says Spectra to use extreme caution, especially for pacing, etc.

Could've sworn you can't "detect" lasers. You need a deflector of some kind and it needs to be turned off after or the cop will know.

A laser detector is normally "you just got popped". It might detect sporadic reflections now and again. It might detect the laser at a longer range than the laser gun is able to (or legally allowed to ...) get a speed reading.

Instant-on radar doesn't do you a whole lot of good to detect, either, unless it can detect the radar being used on other vehicles in your vicinity. If there are other vehicles in your vicinity, it's probably better to just not be the vehicle that's attracting attention.

Thinking to yourself, "If I were a cop and my day's assignment is to write speeding tickets, where would I want to set up?" is a good thing to do.

Likewise, "This speed limit is abnormally low, and would be a prime spot to write tickets. Hmmm."

600 SS+ go faster than cars...no need for detector?!

I have had a beltronics detector for years and used to use it but don't anymore. It's undetectable by detector detectors. And I have a laser jammer, which works well as a laser detector as well (better than the beltronics), but really don't care about either anymore. I've been saved a few times and the radar detectors work, but police on the 400 highways seem to mostly drive up from behind and estimate your speed anyways.
You need an undetectable detector or you WILL be caught.
I wouldn't bother, I'd just pay attention always and that will work the best.

What he said. Beltronics or forget it. They don't leak and thus are undetectable. Waze is pretty accurate until you get out of the city or off major roads. My Beltronics has saved me numerous times.
