Pennsylvania in the Spring

I plotted out a route that I may ride this coming April. It looks like a two day trip as it stands, and I tried to get in some of the roads mentioned here that I've not been on before, Route 666, Wykoff run, 125, Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Park. One or two of the roads may be gravel, but that's the price you pay for using Google in Terrain mode while plotting a route. ;)

If you don't own a GPS, you can convert the GPX file into an uncompressed KML file and view the result in Google Earth.

Hey guys,

looking to head to PA in June, was looking for a good place to stay for 2 nights.. maybe use as a base?

Leave toronto 1pm on a Friday, ride to NY/PA.. Sat ride PA roads all day. Sunday ride back to Toronto.

Anyone out together a good route that would suit this?

cheers

Watkins Glen and the finger Lakes are something I'd like to ride in New York Pennsylvania, and I've heard State College is a good base for twisty roads.

Thanks - ill look them up .

Btw - what should I need to know about the traffic rules there ? Any tolerance for speeding ? Troopers Out to get out of towners?

Pennsylvania has no reciprocity with Ontario, so if you collect a performance award, it's out of pocket with no repercussions on your driving record.

My touring pace rarely 10mph over posted these days.

Also, can we turn right on a Red light (after stopping ofcourse) .. <gone off looking for information on google.. >

I've used State College for a base a couple of times. As a matter of fact I was there this week on my return from Deals Gap. There is a Fairfied Inn at 2215 North Atherton St. which I've stayed at several times.

I think the rate is about $94 if you have a CAA membership and $99 without. It's next door to Ottos Pub and Brewery which has fantastic food and beverages.

Don't overdo it on the Slab Cabin IPA if you have to ride the next day (first hand experience). There's also a BMW, Triumph, Ducati, dealer across the street which can provide some entertainment if you like to browse and kick tires.

I sometimes ride the PA roads pretty quickly but always slow down and respect the speed limits in town and where people are living. If you encounter slower traffic wait for a safe opportunity to pass and give a friendly wave when you go by. Many times the drivers in PA will pull over and wave you by.

Wow.. Just planning a trip in PA - plan to use St Mary's as a base.
There's tones of roads to choose from. Trying to make a nice series of daytrip routes.

Btw what's the speed limit there ? Are they posted regularly?

I was just there on the long weekend. If you are staying in St. Mary's I recommend doing 120 up to Lockhaven and back - the speed limit is mostly 55 but the locals all run it at 70 or so. But take note of falling rock warnings. They had a slide not long before and a couple of times I did have to dodge piles of rocks in my lane. I stayed in Renovo and coming home I took 144 north to Galeton = great if you like twisty though the pavement gets a little rough as you head north.

thanks, yeah I've plotted both routes on my google map. I just now have to sit down and link the good roads together. Will make a conversion chart to stick on my dash as my speedo is in KM only.

That reminds me, need to find accommodation.

Accommodation booked and routes created :)

Thanks for the help

Lord how I hate riding through Olean NY. I've managed to plot around it the last couple of times I've been down that way. (Alright, I hate riding through most of the cities)

The part of Olean I hate is the left turn going east on 417 until the turn off south on 44. One of the most depressing rides past some of the worst housing I've ever seen. FEMA should just burn the place down and give everyone a trailer (mobile home) -... Again!

Report back after your trip. I'm planning a similar run later this summer. Ride safe!

Will do. We're staying in St Mary's. Leaving TO on Friday afternoon, coming back Sunday. We created a route for the saturday that covered most of what has been discussed. Lets see how it pans out. I took a look on YouTube to see what kind of roads to expect as well.

Also leaving Friday after work returning Sunday. We're you guys staying in st Mary's?
Last time I was thru there seamed like a shady town.

we're off next weekend (22-24), not this weekend. Theres a choice of two hotel chains.. Best Western and Comfort inn. That should be ok. In the town there is a place called Gunners Inn..
I'm guess most towns are somewhat shady, especially downtown?

Penn was awesome as usual.
Watch out for the wildlife, had a few oh s### moments with deer and a very, very, very close encounter with a really big bear that did not want to share the road with me.
All I can say is thank god for abs ;).
