You feel you're entitled to a little something extra because you choose to operate a luxury item?
I'd like a trophy

To filter in traffic makes common sense it free up road space it benifit many, to lane split when traffic is moving at a decent pace is just stupid, dangerous and will only benifit the splitter.
Arguments about riders being entitled to split because they somehow "sacrifice" are equally self-serving. In exchange for that "sacrifice" riders often enjoy cheaper commutting fuel and parking costs.
You've never had it happen to you? Never had a car pass you, in your own lane? Never had a car start cutting between a group of bikes, out on a group ride. All that I can say, is that you must be very lucky.
You are mixing up filtering and cutting off .... Of course I am cut off daily as you or anybody else here, but I have never seen a car filter or lane split. That was I believe Paul's argument I was replying to.
Now the thread is morphing into whether the OP exaggerated cop's action ... irrelevant in my opinion. The fact was, stopped traffic and he filtered. That is the scenario. OP credibility and describing the situation correctly has nothing to do with that.
It does not benefit "many". It benefits only the rider, and may do so to the detriment of those who lose position in traffic and are now behind the bike (or multiple bikes) because of the filtering and who as a result of one or more bikes in line ahead of them may not make it through the NEXT intersection before the light turns red.

Nope, not mixing the two up at all. I've had cars grind tires against the curb, to 'filter' up alongside me at lights, and stop signs. I've had cars 'lane split' me, by driving half in another lane or on the breakdown lane, in order to pass me in heavy traffic. That's not 'cutting off.'
Fair enough. It has not happened to me in 4 years of riding in Ontario.

Well then you have never seen it done properly. If you sit and watch congested traffic flow in a big European city, you will see the bikes clear off quicker than the cars and keep doing so. It facilitates traffic flow greatly. Saying anything else, IMO is being shortsighted to a ME-FIRST attitude as opposed to trying to aid traffic flow.
There are two types of road users:
1 - Those that impede traffic flow
2 - Those who facilitate traffic flow
I have seen both bikes and cars fit both descriptions. A bike filtering is #2 a bike going slow and holding people up is #1.
A few places in Europe like in Spain, now have a motorcycle/scooter only area at the front of the intersection, so that it aids filtering. THEY DID THIS TO HELP TRAFFIC FLOW.... after doing studies on the matter. Wow what a concept.
Furthermore, maybe the argument of sacrifices isn't strong, but one that IS STRONG is that because of the physical dimensions and capabilities of a motorcycle, the government should use THIS ADVANTAGE to benefit traffic flow for ALL road users.
I don't know why we are even discussing this. It is common sense. If you don't want to split, don't.... stop complaining if YOU WEREN'T paying attention and didn't see someone approaching you. Motorcyclists above ALL OTHER road users should be use to checking their 6 ALL THE TIME.
The big difference here was that the bike's filtering endangered noone. The same could not be said about the car.
My experiences in Europe was there was a much larger 2 wheel presence on the roads, so them filtering to the front and moving on quickly would help. I don't live in Toronto of the GTA so not sure if its similar, but in my trips into the city I have never noticed anywhere near the same amount of bikes/scooters on the road.
Would there be the same benefits with a smaller 2 wheel population?
I dont like lane splitting just for the fact that cars do not expect it, and I prefer to keep the rubber down.
Commuting from downtown Toronto to Brampton, every day, I generally see between 4 and 6 motorcycles on the road, at the same time as me. Of those, I see most on the highway. The benefit, to other road users, would essentially be zero.

The majority of motorcyclists shouldn't be behind a set of handlebars, yet doing so immediately makes them an expert at navigating traffic.
I sacrificed a comfortable ride, leg room and fuel efficiency to drive my Lamborghini Gallardo to work today.. i deserve a big parking spot right by the front door! I should be allowed to park in the handicapped spots.
Hang on...so you go into other vehicles lanes....but when someone comes in to your lane..it's a problem?
Sounds to me like he was just filtering too.
I'm not for or against splitting or filtering...but pick a side!
