off duty cop tries to run me off the road for lane filtering....

it's not "aloud" bfd,

The problem is, if someone moves in the lane and takes out a bike, it's automatically "the ****ing useless cager".. Maybe they're not doing it on purpose..maybe they're checking traffic ahead..maybe they're just moving around in the lane. People don't expect bikes to be doing this because it's illegal. Just like the guy on the Vrod who rode down the lane between my car and the curb. What if I squeezed him by accident? Is that my fault? Of course it is on here. If it was legal and I knew I had to watch for this, that's a different story. If people want to do it, knock yourself out, but don't whine about people moving around in the lane or a car taking up part of your lane while riding.

Time for a reality check.
I would seriously look at the insurance liability of a cop using his/her own vehicle for a non-emergency stop that would possibly involve serious damage or injury.

A friend works for the feds and isn't allowed to use her own car for running errends due to the potential liability of having a collision while doing government business. I can't recall how Domenic's Pizza made out when one of their time limit deliveries went sour with a crash but the legal bills alone would be staggering.

This was a minor traffic infraction not a life-threatening issue.

Someone posted that they called the police chief and I think the chief would have appreciated the info. I can't see him/her wanting the potential liability of rogue officers risking his budget with a multi million dollar payout.

If an employee has a crash with their own vehicle a) are they insured for what they are doing ie using their vehicle for other than personal transportation and b) do they carry enough liability? If the answer is no to either condition the employer should check their legal position.

I work for the government and I'm encouraged to use my own car. Despite the problem of liability for me. I actually had to call my insurance company and declare that I am using my car occasionally to attend off-site meetings. It did not affect my rates. So that's not necessarily a universal thing.

Look, the OP did something illegal. The cop apparently did something wrong. But we're only hearing the OP's side of the story. The reality may be different. Nobody should be run off the road, absolutely. But we don't really know what happened here. Bottom line is, splitting and filtering pisses people off..don't whine if things don't work out the way you'd hoped.

+1 agree 100% but if a "****ing useless cager" moves over intentionally its spark plug ceramic to the window just saying and that is not the case here|(ar per OP) the cop cut him off after the light while they where driving big difference.

IF there is someone out there doing this, filtering should be the least of the police officer's worries.

I have to say it's this kind of ***** that makes me want to flee the GTA. "OH NO! Someone is getting ahead of me in line! Don't they know how important I am in my big SUV? Well I'll show them!"

If you're in a car/truck, why the hell would you care if a bike wiggles through stopped traffic to the front of the queue? They're not holding you up--they're faster than you are.

Boggles my mind.

Anyways, I think lane filtering is quite safe until some righteous a**hole tries to prove a point. Lane splitting in moving traffic could be relatively safe too if drivers paid attention to what's around them. But that's not gonna happen in Ontario is it. Where people with other view points (and first hand knowledge of better driving laws) are told to "go back to Mongolia". Wow...that's so clever.

Oh man, these are probably the best two comments I have read on the forum in a few days...

Agreed.....but we have an unofficial culture of queuing up in line, wait your turn type of driving. All these straight, congested roads make everyone a bit loony too.

They're ****** that the bike woke them up. They usually like to nap through the red and most of the green.

I don't know what this thread is about but this was just ****ing funny.....well done sir

Unsafe in who's opinion? If the OP lost his balance while in my lane and fell under my car...is that safe?

I'm just saying..pick a side...if you're going to go into another vehicles lane.....then don't ***** when others come into your lane...play fair.

Ya Paul, apples and oranges. One is filtering, if ANYTHING you can compare what the car did to SPLITTING... which is different.

PLUS - If a bike is filtering or splitting it is reducing congestion, it is one less car off the road and should be applauded by EVERYONE, except too many people in this city are have a ME FIRST attitude that is so short sighted, that they don't even see the benefit motorcycles who split are providing.

Heck I don't even have a street bike these days, but if you are on a bike and you are filtering safely, I WILL GIVE YOU ROOM!!!!!

The big difference here was that the bike's filtering endangered noone. The same could not be said about the car.

It reminds of the ******** at work. We have a weekend shift that runs Friday to Sunday and are 12 hour shifts. However, if we are punctual we get paid for a full 40 hour week. There's guys at work that complain because we get paid the four hours without having to work them. What they don't seem to get is that we are sacrificing EVERY weekend working and that's why we get a little extra.

So we ride bikes, which aren't as convenient to have, insurance more expensive (relatively speaking), but most of all, is more dangerous. So we sacrifice a lot to ride motorcycles, should we not get a little something out of it. Think if all those jerk off single people in SUV's rode bikes, that would help traffic greatly.

Basically I'm just saying that those that sacrifice stuff, usually do get a little bonus out of society (think cops getting free donuts for putting themselves in danger for us).

For me I don't do it because the cars aren't prepared for it here. I had a guy in Brampton do it to me and it bothered me. But it bothered me because I saw him in my mirror and thought if only it was legal I could move over a bit for him. Then while I wasn't looking he drove right past me and merged into moving traffic (we had started moving while he was still filtering).

Actually it's an official culture of queuing, because this sort of queue jumping is illegal.

Op was not complaing about car in his lane, hes complaning of being harrased by the cop. To filter in traffic makes common sense it free up road space it benifit many, to lane split when traffic is moving at a decent pace is just stupid, dangerous and will only benifit the splitter.
If i see a bike behind me in a stopped traffic i will move some inches to let him pass my world will not crumble and i will still eat meat on friday.

Good morning all

You feel you're entitled to a little something extra because you choose to operate a luxury item?
