Motorcycle Transport- Ottawa to Toronto

I have a friend that's keen to do the trip. I just don't know if I'm ready. Thanks for the tie down advice. I just assumed you needed a wheel chock.
Until about 10 years ago one barely ever saw wheel chocks. For years many of us (which ever that is :) ) hauled dirt & race bikes around in the back of a 1/2 ton pickup truck and only use 2 tiedown straps, one at each handlebar grip. We just made sure the front wheel was straight square with front upright of the truck's box. I drove many 200 - 500 km trips like this with no ill results. Still do on occassion. I wonder how much the wheel chock thing is simply a marketing thing. Sure they can give added security if all else is right also but ......

Depending on the bike it may require strap extensions or a Canyon holder so as to connect the straps without touching any bodywork. Sheep skin covers with velcro can be used to wrap around the straps to protect and bodywork. Bike shops sell all this.

Best of luck with your adventure.

Some people simply bolt a wheel chock to a piece of plywood and lay that down onto the truck's bed at the front. This way they do not have to drill holes in the truck box. Also the assembly will not move if it is snug up against the front of the box once the bike is strapped down.

If you're a newbie at it do you want to to wreck your ride before you get started? Either hire a pro or rent a M/C specific trailer with proper tie downs and chocks. Learn on your next bike.

+1 ^ if your a newbie and/or have no one competent with this specific experience to show/help you when actually doing it.

I bought my first bike in Ottawa last fall. I planned on riding it back to Toronto this spring but the winter lay off and my lack of experience has me worried that it might be too long of a trip. I am looking in to other options to get it down here. I got a quote on automoves.ca and it was $450. That seems pretty expensive and would negate the savings I made by buying the bike in the Ottawa.

I checked out the thetoyhauler.ca but the site is gone. Does this service still exist.

The other option is my dad's truck. Don't know how keen the old man would be about installing a wheel chock. Is this big undertaking?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Wow. Ooppss .. thanks for the heads up about my site.

Looks like im up for renewal ..

What do you think is the best option?? I was thinking of maybe taking Grey Hound up there and then riding it back. Is there any other way that would be cost effective to ship it over??

Sweet!! you guys revived my old thread!! Im already on my 3rd bike!

U-HAUL rents motorcycle trailers for about $17 a day. They will show you how to use the trailer when you rent it. All you need is a ball hitch.

My gf drove me to ottawa, I jumped on the bike and had a blast all the way home (even in the very very heavy storm)
Drive me down and I will ride the bike back for ya

I've ridin to toronto and back to ottawa twice. it is a very boring ride, but you're only going one way, so it's not that bad.

You're obviously going the wrong way. 416/401 is not the way on a motorcycle.

The right way is a much longer (read curvier) trip.

On a new to you bike Toyhauler is probably your best bet. Halfway back is not the time to find out that something is not right with the bike you just bought.

Third Bike :) So how did you get the bike to Ottawa?
Just an Fyi for anyone trying to do the same,I took my Sprint from Peterborough to Cape Breton in the back of my F15O.First time loading and everything went great :)

After 28 yrs of police work, including supervising a traffic unit, IN MY OPINION , U Haul is the worst on the road.
If it's a really cool bike, I think I have to go to Ottawa and will drive it back - really fast.

Thanks for all the feedback.

It's given me a lot to think about. @infernobuster aka thetoyhauler I'll hit you up for a quote over PM.

Another place you can call as well is "towabike.ca". I had them pick up my bike when I bought it... amazing service!!!

A guy I know hauls his ZRX 1200 inside his Toyota Sienna minivan. I can send you info & pics of how he does it.

...you guys again...*facepalm*

Toyhauler or kneedragger are your best bets on this site.

Good luck.
