Why has this become such a huge issue?

Unsurprisingly, when people ignore the reality of a little problem, it grows into legislation. Nobody has ever liked a loud motorcycle or snowmobile, but because a select few grew into a significant number, here we are. If you are caught with ANY aftermarket pipes on your sled, the fine is around 500 bucks. The riders foolishly thought that going WFO across the lakes and fields at 2 am weren't bothering anyone, lol. Bikes are no different; the shriek of a crotch rocket pisses people off and not just for the noise, but for the implication that the bike is racing. For all the idiots that wanted extra attention, now you have it. Congratulations.

Yep, the "screw the world" attitude is ok, as long as the world doesn't decide to return the favour.
I've ridden bikes since 17, and I get ****** off at the Sunday morning morons ruining my neighbourhood with their straight pipes.

If we are going to address this in society, it needs to be fair, which means those goofs in the fart-can Honda Civics, the idiots with the "DUF-DUF" sound systems and the 18-wheeler engine brakers.

Here's a video in case people think loud pipes matter...

I have an aftermarket exhaust on my VFR but I specifically bought something that is not loud but just outlines the beautiful sound of a V4 engine. (Recommend Delkevic products, btw, good price, good quality)
No one has ever given me an angry look even. I also shut down the motor at night and cruise to my house once I get into my t-house complex.

Inline 4 engines generate a very high pitch noise which can certainly be annoying. I used to have a CBR900RR for a short time and hated the sound while riding on the hwy. That and straight pipe cruisers is what pisses most people off. Cruisers usually daytime, when they roll by, slow-mo, revying the crap out of their pigs; and super sports - fly by night, screeching like a pack of wounded wild animals.

Personally what pisses me the most is the bass in some cars because it's a constant and mind numbing, repetitive noise and also the lawnmowers every weekend.

Guy across the road from me has a Harley. Had one for years and years. Probably has straight pipes. I hear him come home from work most days but never hear him leave for work in the morning. It can be done, if the rider gives a ****.

+1 as above. Of course it's possible, but it's more fun for the idiots to make noise and make sure everyone knows they have a bike and they're either leaving or arriving. On my old Genesis Coupe, I never thought anything of gunning it because I didn't think it was loud. Then a few neighbours said they get woken up when I left for work and could tell if I was late. I just drove off in a higher gear and never heard another complaint again. Too many people only give a crap about themselves and no one else, that's the problem...selfishness.
