But aren't you missing out on one of the best features of the ROK straps? One side is a regular strap, the other side is stretchy.

I tried something along those lines, but couldn't find heavy enough elastic for them.

I now own four sets of Rok Straps, two for the bike and one each for the cages, so I guess I'm a +4 for Rok Straps.

I've ridden 13.5 hrs on an '09 Ninja 250 before, 11-12 hour rides on my FZ more than I can count on one hand and a couple 11-12.5 hour rides on my ZX. It's not the riding length or kms for myself that worries me, it's just for all the gear staying stable and attached properly without falling or slipping to somewhere where they shouldn't.

2004 kms one way. My mid point stop will be Edmundston, NB. I think I'll get a cargo net for sure. And I've also decided no car, my parents can take their own. I want to finally ride the Cabot pretty bad. I've driven it in car for too many years, hah.
 
What would you guys use for a GPS?

I know RAM is a great name for mounts, and this U-bolt design is actually narrow enough to fit on my bars. I could put my GPS inside of the ziplock for water protection and stick it in the mount, or I can try this one...

I don't know if I'd stick it to the tank, I'd have to see what the view is like. I'm afraid I'd have to look down too far and either take my eyes off the road too much or the chin of my helmet would hit my chest or both. I might be able to stick it to the top of the fork, though. Looks like that sticky mount also has four holes for screws, I could put it over one of the holes on my fork and at least get one bolt through for safety.

I have an old tomtom one 130 if it makes any difference.
 
Ram has a stem mount you could use if your steering head has a void.
